The clutch pedal on my Super M is sloppy on the 1 3/8" shaft because it is a non live PTO and has seen a lot of cycles. I was planning to take a 1 1/4" sch 40 pipe nipple and turn it down on the OD, bore out the clutch pedal and use the nipple as a press fit bushing. How good an idea is this? The biggest difference I see is that the bearing sufaces will be steel on steel instead of cast (malleable?) on steel. There is a zerk fitting that I will bore out the bushing for. I have a mini lathe and a floor model 1/2" drill press. What's the best way to drill out the clutch pedal for the bushing with the tools that I have?

The problem I see (I just fixed one for a customer) is the shaft is worn about as bad as the cluch pedal. On the repair I did I made a new shaft and bored and sleeved the pedal with oil impregnated bronze. If you want to do the nipple I would suggest using a brass or bronze nipple. N.

If you could mount the pedal on the carriage of the lathe on an angle plate you could bore it with a boring rar mounted in the chuck. Make the boring bar so you can admance the tool bit out of it with a screw from behind it, locking it with another set screw in the usual way. Get the feel for how much of an advance you need so you can get a press fit for the bushing. Aim for a tight fit, you can always chuck up the bushing and turn or file one or two thou off it. Use bronze if you can get a bushing. A reamer would work, but you can make the boring bar for nothing, using an old center drill for the tool bit, just drill a hole for it in a scrap of steel bar. This is less expensive than buying a fairly large reamer for a one time job. Clamp the pedal to the angle and bore through the angle too if necessary. You won't have to have the pedal perfectly centered on the spindle center line, close is good enough for this. The center of the pedal hle may be hard to locate if it is worn bad anyway. You don't need a thick bushing, 1/16 or 3/32 wall would be enough and you don't want to make the pedal too thin.

In stead of the pipe nipple, you might want to try bronze. Best to drill a bit under size and bore or use a reamer for the final cut. Cut a grove on the bushing and drill a small hole in it for the greese to coat the whole thing.
