Does my garage door opener motor need a capacitor ???

My garage door opener electric motor is giving me problems. I have determined that it doesn't have any "start-up" power. The wall button and remote are signalling the unit to start but it won't. I can prevent the motor from starting by putting even the smallest bit of hand pressure on the pulley (no belt attatched). If I signal it to start then give the belt a little push, the motor starts up and works fine, seems to have lots of power once it's spinning. A friend of mine said it is probably a capacitor start motor (the motor has no brushes, etc.). Is the capacitor the cylindrical shaped part with two wires going in from the control unit and two wires going out to the motor? Any help on this would be appreciated.

how I check the capacitor is to apply power and shut it off. Then bridge the 2 wires going to the motor with an insulated handle screwdriver. You should get a strong arc, but be sure to be holding the insulated handle as it's going to be a strong Zap. This is the charge to start the motor under load. No zap means the capacitor is leaking or shorted. Hope this helps, but be careful- you don't want to get the shock off it.

I don't know anything about garage door openers but when mine acts up I check air pressure in my tractor's tires and the specific gravity of the engine coolant. Hope this helps

I noticed that you just said Saskatchewan but didn't mention the town. That's because you know that I might do a little dropping tire pressure myself if I knew where you lived. I didn't think you could drop tire pressure on the ETD's since they were factory sealed (like Rolls Royces).

Yup Mike, that's true. They are sealed at the factory, But I thought you had the Hydroincliner meter to service them. BTW, I live in Sask, Utah and have restored a Merriweather Hauls-All.

Typically it is mounted to the motor. Long round black plastic thing with a metal cover over it.

Check the connections on the cap first. Sometimes they get loose or warm and then stop making a good connection. They are cheap to replace.

If there is a capacitor to be replaced, be sure to replace with one of similar ratings. The ratings will be printed on the capacitor.
