When is it time to give up?

I have a lawn mower w/ a brigg and straton engine. It's six yrs. old and runs until it gets hot; then it dies and will not start until it gets cooled off again. I rebuilt the carb, new plug and air filter. Checked the cut out switch and it works fine. My thought is the coil, but the guy at the shop thinks they never go bad. So anyways I say i'm going to replace the coil and if it works and stays running after it gets hot good, but if it still does the same thing is it time to call it quits and get a new mower or is there something else here I over looked?
Thanks for any and all replies.

I would give up when the wife says you're spending more time on the mower than you are with her.

CHECK COIL CLEARANCE BETWEEN COIL AND FLYWHEEL THE GAP SHOULD BE THE THIKNESS OF A POST CARD.IF ITS TO CLOSE ITS CAUSING THE COIL TO HEAT UP AND LOSE SPARK INDUCTION POWER.ALSO CARBON BUILD-UP ON PISTON CAN CAUSE THE SAME PROBLEM.CHECK THE SPARK WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN IS IT BLUE,ORANGE OR NONE.THAT WILL HEP ME TROUBLE SHOOT YOUR PROBLEM.

Don't give up easily. Most Briggs motors are easy to fix as soon as you determine what the problem is, they are also not usually very expensive to fix. If you feel that you must give up you might consider looking in Nothern Hydralics catalog for a new motor, not a new mower. My father has had the same Snapper chassis for about 25 years, he is on his third Briggs motor I think. Nothern Hydralics has about the best price on small motors that I have found.

Are you using 10-40 oil? Change to straight 30. The air cooled engine runs much hotter and breaks down the viscosity package. Straight weights hold viscosity better and have the most "oil" vs additive.

The coil may be your fix. If it dies again, pull the plug wire off and see if you still have a strong spark while it's hot. If you have a strong bluish spark, your ignition system is probably not to blame.

When it dies, does it just QUIT suddenly, or does it lose power, then die? Any "funny" noises occur at that time that you don't hear otherwise?

If you try to re-start immediately after it dies, does it have good compression? If you're pulling it hard, then it loses power and dies, the exhaust valve may be getting hot enough to stick and stay partially open. You may want to pull the head and do some cleaning and checking in there.

I would go for a set of points and condenser. Earlier post said break down of condenser and that is a common problem. At six years the points probably need replaced as the little pin that opens and closes the points(some models) could be worn until it doesn't open enough when the points get hot and expand thus not opening. If there is a condensor in that settup, I would suspect it is breaking down.

Thanks everyone for you inputs. Sorry I forgot to mention it's a 4.5hp electronic ignition system. So there is no points and condensor. But thank you all for your advice and comments. I bought another used coil to see if that does the trick, and whether it does or not i'll post back and let everyone know. Thanks again. Ken O.

I have found over the years that if one of those engines looses ignition when hot 9 times out of 10 it will be the coil. That is THE 1st thing I check.
