I have one of those portable 12 volt battery booster packs that works great. The problem is, I have some 6 volt tractors that need a boost sometimes. How can I use this 12 volt booster on a 6 volt system? I don't want to burn up the generator, coil, battery, or anything else.
Thanks in advance!

Each cell in a battery contains about two volts. I have counted over to the third cell and drilled a hole in the top of a battery and screwed a screw into it and with that and the ground had six volts. I think I ran a six volt radio from this arrangement....but, it would make the batteries current at half mast. L8R....Fred OH

We used to regularly boost 6V tractors w/12V vehicle.Do NOT hook to battery. After making sure tractor is in Neutral,PTO off, turn on key and connect to frame or block of tractor with one cable and touch other cable to main lug of starter, observing tractors polarity.

This will IMMEDIATELY activate starter BYPASSING ALL SAFETY SWITCHS/NEUTRAL SWITCHES so be EXTREMELY CAREFUL!!
.
Do not turn 6V starter for long periods on 12V.

One suggestion - Connect the first jumper/booster cable to the starter post and then just touch the other jumper/booster cable to a frame ground. Takes the spark away from a sensitive area and you can even be sitting on the tractor for safety.
For what it is worth.

That's the way to do it, but will the little booster pack have enough juice to turn the starter by itself? Really never used one, but I thought they were more of an 'assist' then the main power....

I don't think there is a way to mix the voltages to make it work as a true 'booster'.

That little booster should sure spin any 6v tractor starter. We used one once on my wife's mercedes diesel car before it was ours. The battery wouldn't spin the starter at all, just "click". Put that little booster on for awhile and varrrooom!
