Arc Welding question

I am just starting to use my nifty new MIG welder and have a question. If you are joining parts together, do you generally try to put the ground clamp on the larger of the two? I suspect that after you tack the pieces in place, there will be enough conduction that it doesn't make a difference.

Also- if I am welding 1/8" wall thickness tubing to 3/8" thick bar stock, would I set the MIG for the thinner material?

I need to find a good book on this...

your weld only needs to be as strong as smallest piece. best book on this is lincolns' "The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding" availabile at your local welding store. also by mail order from lincoln web site.

The series of books published by Lincoln are almost a must for any new welder or machine

shouldn't matter, just put the ground clamp where it will make the best contact, in this case the flat bar. I usually set the machine for the heavier material. Then direct the weld to put more into the thicker piece. If you don't put enough heat into thicker piece you'll get cracking when the weld cools. You might want to preheat everything. Hope this helps.
