I have heard several stories about a machine that would turn worn rod journals down, while the crank remains in the block!! The unit bolted on to the bolt holes of the pan and then turned the crank, while it turned the rod journal... I have never seen one, but I have talked to several people who have!!!! Does anyone know where I could possibly find one of these old turning units??? Thanks Tyson

Back in the 50's and 60's we had a local automotive parts and service company that had one of these grindindg units along with a talented person who ran it. We hired him on a number of occasions to grind a rod journal with crankshaft and engine still in the vehichle. It had an auxilary electric motor that coupled to the flywheel with a mating gear and turned the crankshaft at the proper speed for good grinding results. This particular machine did a very good job and required no additional polishing and etc.. Check with these types of services in your area to see if anybody has one.

I started work years ago with a seasoned mechanic. He had one in a box, he'd used it during WWII, did emergency repairs on the tractors in the field. Anything was done to keep the food production up. This was used mainly with engines with babbit(poured) bearings, The stones were rough, and it took a bunch of emery cloth work later to get a near smooth surface on the crank. One today would be more a curiosity than a usable tool. Even a good one wouldn't turn out work nearly as good as a crankshaft grinder in a shop. John in Ne.

Are you sure you would want the grindings in your engine? Personally I do not care for an overhaul in the machine, be it car, truck, or tractor.

There was a company called Postma that made grinding stones that were installed in place of rod bearings, and then you used the starter to turn the engine and grind the crank. I have some literature somewhere about the company and its products. It seems crude by todays standards, but it evidently worked to some degree. Hope this helps.

I saw a Sunnen grinder sell on eBay a couple of years ago it was selling for under a 100.00. Nice explaination of using poured babbet bearings and the use of such a grinder.
