Mobile home water tube / pipe?

I recall somewhere before hearing/reading about two different types of pipe/tube used in mobile homes/trailers that had problems. If memory serves, one type was leaching toxic chemicals into the water and the other became brittle and broke or something.

My friend just purchased a mobile home built I think in 1980. He asked about replacing some water fixtures and said about it having gray colored water tubing. Does anyone remeber what tubing in question was causing the problems or know where I could find out for him? Post replies or email.

Many thanks,
Mark Kw

My dad plumbed the air lines in our cabinet shop 17 years ago with Quest pipe and we have not had one little problem out of it since. We've run 150 pounds of air pressure in it 5 days a week for this long and its held together. I would think that water in it would be a piece of cake. My local hardware store still sells it and all the fittings, it ain't widely used but it is available.

Polybutylene plumbing installed 1/1/78-7/31/95 in homes purchased after 9/12/99.

There was a lot of trouble with some that went by the brand name "Quest". It was gray. Not 100% sure, but as I understand it, the trouble was with the fittings breaking, not the pipe itself. I don't think you can buy it anymore, but there are replacements for it on the market. Big class action lawsuit too.

Some of the information distributed has been by TV talking heads and newspaper writers that have no knowledge of plumbing nor the materials used. The pipe may be polybutylene. The first fittings used were acetyl and they (fittings) proved to be not rugged enough for the purpose- some of them broke. The switch was made to copper fittings. Apparently, chlorine does deteriorate the pipe over time- but I have not seen conclusive evidence of this. Now no one makes polybutlylene pipe. For those with private wells, the issue of chlorine does not exist. But my observation over the last 50 years is that well water is now much more corrosive to copper than it used to be. So any system that includes copper will be subject to corrosive water, if any. Some of the well water in my area eats pinholes in copper within a year, yet is perfectly safe to drink. For well water, I would use only CPVC and then only the pipe meeeting Flow-Guard Gold standards. Copper is fine for municipal systems with treated water.

I built our place and used Qest as suggested by the building dept. At that time copper fittings were used. No problems here- but also no chlorine.

Our area also has problems with well water eating copper pipes. I recently installed a heatpump water heater which has dropped our electric use by 1/3. The plumbing was going to be a problem with anything but copper so it occurred to me to test the ph of our water. Turned out to be almost neutral, not the usual acidic. I installed copper without fear. Going by what other people in the area are experiencing is OK, but not as good as going ahead and testing your own well water to see what problem you might have.
