Is this a spelling error or are there two different companys that used to make these stoves? Any information would help. Wondering if the "Fischer" stoves were U.L. approved?

Thanks,
Jack

Fisher Stoveworks of Grantsburg WI went out of bus. in late 80's early 90's I Can't remember exactly when but the local paper reported that due to a design flaw with the dial draft control on the front of the doors allowed sparks to escape resulting in a number of house fire leading to countless lawsuits sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the manufactoring "shop" was located 200 feet behind my house

Jack, there were Fisher wood stoves back in the 70's - fairly popular heavy duty cast iron models that could burn anything but were not especially efficient. They were a fairly simple box-with-front-shelf design with wide front doors that could be left open with a screen in place to enjoy the fire, but without blowers or convoluted air paths to enhance the heat dispersal. We bought the 'GrandPa' model that could hold 28" long 6" diameter logs and heated our 1800 sq.ft house for over 20 years until we went geothermal. We still have it but I lost track of the company years ago. Probably bought out or simply chose not to compete with the more modern wood stoves.

Correction: they had cast iron doors (with their name and pine trees embossed on the front) but the box was made of heavy steel plates welded together. I just did a yahoo search and there is a lot of info available. They appear to be highly recommended antique stoves that last forever.

Dansen,

Is Fischer and Fisher the same stove? I have a friend that wants to sell me a Fischer stove. That's what is on the front of the double doors. It has pine trees. Stove measures about 32" high, 32" wide, and 30" deep. It's a big sucker.

Thanks,
Jack

In light of Frank M.'s response and the close similarity of the two stoves, it is possible that the Fischer is an earlier version of the Fisher - the company may have changed their name. Does you friend know what year his stove was manufactured?

Very interesting...I doubt that they are the same stove, but rather that the Fischer is an imitation of the Fisher which was extremely popular in the late 70's. Your dimensions are very close to our Grandpa model which is 32 high, 32 wide, but only 27 deep including the front hearth (about 5"). The Fisher has 3 pine trees surrounding a big spinout air vent knob on each door. The left door has FIS and the right HER. A yahoo search on 'Fischer wood stove' resulted in many fewer hits with no references to an actual company but rather mostly hits from classifieds. Maybe someone out there has the real story behind this 'coincidence'.

Can't tell you a thing about the stoves, never heard of them, but the name is interesting. Some of my ancestors were named Fischer. They moved from Germany and changed the spelling of their name to Fisher.
