About 6 months ago, I was at a warehouse making a delivery when I spied an old pallet jack next to a dumpster, I was able to heist that for a carry all for the tractor, while loading it the owner gave me his old CRAFTSMAN 230 amp welder, said it worked a year ago. I just got around to trying it and it works great, anybody tell me anything about the duty cycle on these? Will it really go down to 20%? Hardly seems like it's worth striking an arc, cause you would get shut down. Am I wrong? Is it worth setting up, or more like an old relic?
Thanx
Ron

We got a 200Amp welder from Sears in 1946. It was
used hard. I used to get involved in projects and
welded at 140A or so long and hard as fast as I could reload rods. I never had heard of "duty
cycle" when I was a kid. My brother still uses it.
They are built tough.

I have a Craftman 230 welder that my wife gave me for christmas in "73" our first, can't tell you how many trailers, wood stoves, wood splitters, truck beds, pieces of equip. ect it has welded, it is a 20% duty cycle, but at 230. it is 60% at 120 ant my back has never allowed me to bend over more than 50%. It's probably a good mach. ENJOY it ths. Nat

I have one and it is great for stock thicker than 12 gage. In thin stock it tends to just blow holes. Can't go wrong for that price.

The 20%duty cycle is to do with the coil and heat cycle when welding thicker metals for a long time . If you, look at some ofthe different name brand welders in the same class will not be much if any higher . I,had one with the range setting ,it had a dial for settings work good until lighting hit it.

I have a craftman welder that I've had for un-teen years. Works as good now as when I bought it. I'm not a welder but have gone through tons of rod. I thank you will be happy with it, especially at that price.

I have one that a friend gave me, think maybe it is a 235 amp. It does OK, the 20% duty factor is only at the higher amps, so most work is not affected. I use mine for cast iron and stuff that I think is too big for the MIG, it does fine. If you are using it to make money and need to burn a lot of rods, it may disappoint you.

No, just for farm repairs and small work.

Guess I'll hook it up and use it 'til it gives out. Thanx for the reply

Ron, BIG congrats on your new gift. That is awesome. I will bet that if you are using it for farm use only, you will be able to give it to your kid someday and maybe he to his. They seem to last and last.

Ron, the 20% duty cycle means you can weld 2 minutes out of 10 min. thats a fare amount of weld time, at lower settings if you look close on your welder it may say 60% duty cycle, I wish I could be so lucky to get an free welder, Dave F.
