My brain quit working and I removed the intake manifold from my GMC 4.3 V6 without draining the oil so that I could check if oil was getting to my tappets. I removed one of the bad tappets and was turning the oil pump with a screw driver when I noticed antifreeze puddles bubbling through with the oil. What is the best way to remove the antifreeze without doing damage to the engine when I do get it back together?

Thanks everyone. Someone told me the same things about changing the oil, but said first after changing the oil to add 1 quart of ATF to the oil and drive a mile or two, then change the oil and filter again. They said the ATF was a good detergent.

You don't need the diesel in the engine. I have seen this done too many times and the engine begins to burn oil a few hundred miles later. (no lube for the pistons and rings)

Diesel does not emulsify the antifreeze. You need something to mix with the antifeeze and hold it in suspension unitl the oil is changed. There is a product that is made for this exact job, but it has been so long since I have even seen it I can not remember what it is called.

I would change the oil and filter now. Replace with some cheapy oil and fliter. Let the engine run at an idle until warm. Drain the oil and remove the filter so the oil galley drains as well. Change oil to what ever you are normally using and drive for about 25-30 miles. Open and drain again over night to remove as much as possible.

This is what I have done a few times in the past and it has always worked for me.

Don't run it with only diesel, as pointed out by a few of the responders. If you want to use diesel as a flush, drain the oil, put a couple of quarts of diesel in it, then turn the oil pump with a screwdriver to circulate the diesel through the engine and flush out any antifreeze. Drain that mess, fill with oil, and then turn the oil pump again with a screwdriver to get oil to all of those engine parts, 'cause you want to have oil there pretty quickly after startup.

Since engine didnt run with antifreeze in it, I would let it drain for at least a day, change oil and filter. Change oil and filter again a couple hundred miles again. Think this is all you will need to do. Myself I would not use deisel for a rinse, to thin, If you should choose to do so, better not rev engine or you will be looking for another engine.

Let the engine drain for a day or 2 and most of the stuff should be in the oil pan. I completely agree with the follow-up oil change at 500 miles. But I would never run my engine at all with only Diesel fuel in the crankcase. Too light to lubricate the bearings.

Hi Dennis,

I would change the oil and filter if the engine hasn't been run. Then change oil & filter again in 500 miles.

If you got alot of anti-freeze in the oil after running then I would drain the oil, change the filter, then fill with diesel and let that circulate for about 10 minutes drain then put in new oil and filter. Then change the oil and filter after 500 miles.
