First, run Disk Cleanup to get rid of all the junk Windows likes to accumulate, and go into IE->Tools->Internat Options->General and Delete Files

Then try booting the computer into Safe Mode (hold the Ctrl key down while it boots and select Windows Safe Mode from the menu it displays).

Defrag takes a long time in Safe mode but usually gets through.

First make sure you have the latest Norton virus definitions. What version of windows are you running? Do a complete virus scan first. Reboot in the safe mode by holding the F8 key. Then run a scandisk, reboot again.(safe mode) Then try your defrag.

Diskeeper has been around since the mid-early 80's. Long before Windows was even conceived. They know what defraging a disk is all about. I used Diskeeper on my VAX computers at work years ago. Loved it.

As long as we are on computer problems:

When I boot my computer, I get 'One or more of your hard disk drives may have developed bad sectors. Run Scandisk...' So I go into the default scandisk, and it works a while & says it ran out of memory, please run Scandisk from Windows.

So I go to Windows, and run Scandisk (just tried it from Safe Mode, same thing) and it goes into an endless loop of 'Checking file allocation tables, checking folders, cheching file allocation tables, checking folders, etc.

Nothing ever gets done. I can bypass the errors & checks & the computer works, but the problem is still there. I am running Windows 95v2, wish to upgrade to W98 but want to figure this problem out first. 64meg, jbond motherboard with built in SCSI & SCSI hard drive/CD.

What's going on?

I've had that before, usually when a harddrive was having problems or more often when the install of windows was getting old.
My suggestion is to backup everything to a good secure space. Assuming you have a 233mhz processor or better upgrade directly to windows 2000. If you could put another 64mb of ram in that'd be terrific.
If you don't have a 233 or better stick with 98, or if you can NT 4.0 is very good. I'll run fine on 64mb. I have it on my laptop which is a 75mhz with 32mb its a little slow but not too bad.

A clean install should work out most of your problems. Windows tends to get boogered (thats a technical term)up with little apps and stuff over time and not run as efficiently as possible.

If you've got more than 233mhz go to Windows 2000 its MUCH more stable than the others. I've tried XP and for the money they want for it its a waste of time. Everything you could do in another version of windows with two clicks XP needs three, I find that very aggravating.

Hi Paul,

Turn off all auto start programs, ie any program that starts to run after you get to Win95/98 start-up screen, don't matter what the program is.

Cold boot the puter = turn power off for 15sec min. This removes programs from RAM.

Then run scandisk from Win95/98 start screen and use "through" scan

Then warm boot = restart Win95/98 without turning power off

Scandisk will try to restart several times during the scan, just keep answering "yes" to continue with scandisk. This may take awhile as different programs set codes that are hard to get rid of. You may have to cold boot several times, if scan disk will not continue.

Once scandisk runs a complete cycle, cold boot and run scandisk again.

Then run defrag

I find a cold boot helps more than anything to get things running again.

First make sure you have disabled the screen saver. Second hit control-alternate-delete and end task of everything except Explorer and Systray and then run defrag and reboot after it has finished.

Restart your pc and at the (starting windows) message press the F8 key and chose safe mode.
Then run defrag, then reboot when finished.

Nancy, How long have you left at 44%? Have you tried a scandisk with a thorough setting.

Nick

Exactly, Noton and McAfree are always "on" unless you turn them off. They will interfere with a defrag.
