I try to read all the posts on this board, and I've learned a lot from them. Several of these have been about sandblasters. It seems that everyone buys bags of sand at hardware stores, lumber yards etc. Why can't you use just plain old sand? If you have to run the bagged sand through a screen to get the chunks out, couldn't you do the same with ordinary blow sand? I don't own a sandblaster, so I've never tried it, but I know I'm not the only tightwad on these forums. LOL I'd like to hear from anyone that's ever tried this.
Thanks in advance.
Frank M.

I too like to save a buck. Air is free but not cheap. I have a good Ingersol Rand 5 horse 2 stage compressor. I find that the regular sand blast aggregate, up my way in the North East commonly called Black Beauty comes in 3 grits & cuts faster. $5.50 fer a hunfred pound bag but when you factor in the cost of compresed air versus cost of blast media I lean toward using the aggregate. One thing though on you sand fans. Use WASHED PLAYGROUND sand. They wash out the lung problem causing silica making it safe for kiddie sandboxes for about 80 cents more a bag. Even if YOUR using a mask/repirator there are people around who ain't.... Then again if your blasting old stuff the stuff you blasting away ain't non too healthy to be breathing either...

It is kind of hard around hear to get silica sand sow I buy DRY bagged sand and it works just fine but I think if you dont use it out side you can get sick from breathing the dust silica poisoning or something like that it doesnt make sense to me but maybe someone can clear it up and the special sands do last longer I think thats the big difference Rod MI

That's what I plan on doing next time I need sand. Not because I have to screen my bagged sand, but because I squeak when I walk. LOL

Lord help me if I didn't spell everything correct!

There was quite an in depth session on one of these forums awhile back about sand-blasting.Must be in the arcives some place. The short story--If you want to be able to breathe later on, you must have a proper fresh air supplied breathing set-up,so you don't suck in all the bad stuf, especially when using plain old cheap sand. Kind of like wearing a proper respirator when you spray paint.I am guilty of both, and hopefully did'nt do enough to cause myself health problems.
