While I am certainly no college professor, I was spelling bee champion in my school in 1959. As I read the various email posts on the various boards, I am amazed at the inability of otherwise intelligent people to spell words correctly. These people obviously have jobs that generate income, because they each own a computer. They certainly have skills valuable enough to enable them to earn a living. Why can't they spell even simple words correctly? And why do they often present their entire email post as one continuous sentence? It is rather annoying to me to have to try to make sense out of what they are trying to say. My two cents. All the best..... ....Greg

C'mon Greg. I come here for the fellowship and the common sense education, but more importantly for the wisdom! There is more education given FREELY here than any one person can learn in a lifetime, especially given the collective wisdom of all parties.

If it annoys you that much, why put yourself through the torment? Stay out of areas that annoy you and if this is one.....
Most of the guys here are as nice as anyone you meet. I don't care if they mispell a word. I have enough gumption to know what they mean. I enjoy being helped and helping when I can by this medium.

So you were spelling champ - could you throw a football? Or could you take a pile of parts & make an engine work out of the parts? Or could you do algebra?

We all have our special talents, and shortcomings. My 2 shortcomings are spelling, & remembering names. No brag, but I was on the honors chart. I have very exceptional reading comprehension. My last exposure to diagramming a sentence was 22 years ago, & I could still do it with a passing grade, cold test. I filled a library card at my church, read all the time.

My point is that I CANNOT spell. Vowels in the middle of a word just trip me up something aweful. Try as I might, I can make no sense of spelling. ie, ei, ia, ae, those letter combination types ALWAYS throw me, try as I will. For me, it is so simple to remember 'there' & 'their'; but how the heck do you spell the longer version of bow???? I will never get that right....

Big deal. You are good at it, so it seems simple to you. But let's pick on the talents that you have difficulty with, and then see how 'simple' these simple skills are. :)

The internet presents it's own problems. People without keyboard skills, language skills, are around, willing to participate. Let's gain from them, not put them (us) down.

The other problem with the internet is dial-up connections time out in 5 minutes on most connections, so we don't have time for proof reading, spell checking, etc. Gotta go, gotta go, gotta beat the time limit...

I think that anyone who would criticize peope who specialize in farming or in the rural area and not being an english teacher is holding everyone to high expectations. im still in school as this is my JR year and i tell you what ive learned more under the hood of a car or under a car or working on a tractor or in the garage or the shop in school, than i will ever learn in any english class, however that dosent keep me from trying and maybe im not the best student in english but oh well i think ill survive. people need to grow up a bit and forget about stupid little things like spelling. theres more to life than spelling or grammer or scentence structure.

I guess that is why "ebonics" is so popular. It has no set structures or rules of useage. But it is going to be a cold day.....

Anyway....

Understand what you are saying, but, don't you think that atleast trying to spell the words of our language is something we all should do?

Remember communication is a developed skill not necassarily a given a talent. We in the education system are trying to help you folks develope these skills with an eye toward your future. It is up to you to decide whether or not you want to gain and use them.

I misspell words all the time. I have no trouble with misspelling, but, have you ever tried to read a one-sentence paragraph with about 20-40- words in it? Makes you wonder what thought processes (if any) are going on "upstairs".

I am through ranting now. Let the attacks begin.

Wake up & smell da rozes! While korrect spelling is nice - it isn't THE most important thing in life. I just got back from an accident site where a 66 year old fellow (who can't spell worth a darn) had his foot completely torn off - 100%off! My guess is correct spelling will be far down his list of "important" things.

Besides the fact that incorrect spelling on this site is just as much to do with incorrect typing! Hunting & pecking with knarled fingers may not be the way to go. Maybe we should hire secretaries?

Anyway, this post sure got some backs up!

I don't know which is worse, those who can't spell, or those who continually make double or triple posts. Neither skill requires a college degree, although I guess an argument could be made that we are witnessing the results of "outcome based education". The old boys (and girls) who went no further than the 8th grade were far better able to spell than some of those whose "artistry" appears here.

I hear you! We educators have had the rug yanked out from under us by so many different ideas, theories, plans and so forth that we don't seem to be able to focus on the education we were hired to provide. Education is in a mess and I hate to say it but, I seem to be caught in the middle.

I set high standards in my Tech Ed Class. If a student does not measure up and makes a bad grade, here comes "Mommy and Daddy" to see what MY problem is.

"My little Sally/Johnny/Te'yon or whoever, made good grades unitl they got to YOUR class and then they make a bad grade."
"Your kid didn't have to do anything by himself UNTIL he got to my class, and now he found out the real world isn't going to hand them anything for nothing."

They leave mad, but they leave.

The rest of the world educates their brightest.
America tries to educate the masses. We spend too much time dealing with them asses.

I sometimes have a little trouble figuring out what a writer means when they have misspelled a word or "countrified" their comment. But I keep coming back to YT over and over. I have learned a LOT from the site and am entertained by it.

Everybody has to start their knowledge from some point. Some questions are pretty elementary, but that person wants to know the answer, or they would not have wasted their time asking it.

I believe spelling is a talent that some people have and some people do not. Some of the posters I have found most interesting are not that great at spelling. But looking beyond that, what they write is really good stuff.

The spell check programs I have used are not foolproof. They would not pick up the misuse of to, too and maybe two. And they would never catch the error mentioned in the church bulletin below. Only careful proofreading and the natural ability to spell catch such errors. I see the same kinds of errors in the newspaper almost every day and wonder how much they are paying their editors and copywriters. Maybe they need "copyrighters"!!! HA HA

I don't think anyone except maybe Kim is getting paid to write in the YT site. Just people having fun trying to learn something and maybe help someone else out with their problems, mostly with old tractors, but also sometimes with other things related to farming and rural life. I would not expect someone writing a comment on this site (for free) to spend a whole lot of time looking up words in the dictionary. I just appreciate their help and expertise.

I suggest that you lighten up! If you don't like YT, no one is making you read it. Enjoy the things you like and be tolerant of the things you don't like. Perfect spelling would be nice, but it just is not going to happen.

I think that you must not have to much to do if you are sitting around worring about peoples spelling..... .Always thought that the ones in school who did poorly with their grades were the most knowledgeable people in the game of life....sure they may not spell well, but they know alot about other things..... The ones who did well in school are the ones who still don't understand how the real world works!

Whatever his intentions were it did not come across as nice. Sounds to me like some nerd who just doesn't have anything better to do than prey on peoples enjoyments. Yea, I admit I have seen some spelling mistakes here, so what, this is a good time web site for people who have a occupation, hobby or whatever regarding old iron. He needs to just keep the comments too himself or go too another site and bash them.

I,was hired to run a shop and maintain equipment not to be an english or grammer major, how ever I,can read and comperhind 750 words a min. and scan a wiring or hydraulic diagrams at 1500 words and symbols in the same time. Some of worst spellers and grammer are collage grads. They also could tear up more equipment ,not have no idea what happened . Most of the out are never taught the three Rs its more important for the teacher to worry about how much they make .

I found the worst spellers seem to have more time to set around to BS about, horses, women, tractors, dogs, and old trucks and have less time to spend playing with a spell checker. Now I can't spell, but my dog, my horse, nor my tractors care. Wife still loves and feeds me and people don't mind setting around and BSing with me.

I will agree with most of what you say, however this isn't a spelling or grammer class, and I make some mistakes too, and just about passed English back in the late 60s myself. Just because someone isn't especially talented at spelling or grammer doesn't mean he doesn't have something worthwile to say. I say we just let this one go.

Now that you've been so roundly criticized by so many, some of whom are likely not using their normal screen names, I must say that I've noticed the same thing. Sometimes it"s a lack of knowledge from skipping too many days in school, or not paying attention while there. Granted, our Creator gives us a variety of talents, in varying degrees, but I think a lot of it is the result of not applying oneself. It bothers me when I miss a mistake when I proofread my`message before posting. Others probably don't care about my mistakes. I do. One pet peeve I have is posters who want to know basic service points on their tractors. They have enough bucks for a computer and tractor and won't spend fifteen bucks for an Operator's or Service Manual. Ok- correct me like before, someone will say they are eighteen bucks! Same point. I just included a dollar amount to not scare purchasers away. Why should we waste our time with questions about drain/fill plugs or proper oil when we've gained knowledge through a lifetime of working with this equipment, and are willing to share it with those who have legitimate questions about repairs? Some have a pastoral view of farming, feel they want to now be a part of it, so they buy a tractor and know nothing about it. We could share our experience gained in High School, Military, College, and the Hard Knocks Univ. Some of those with pastoral views should stay in town, away from power equipment, before they hurt someone in their well-intentioned ignorance. Some questions on these boards are really not too bright. Recently, someone asked if the tractor pto ran backwards if the tractor was in reverse. Couldn't that be figured out with just a bit of experimentation? It did make for a few good laughs at the local welding shop, though. But I was nice, I stayed away from that question....PS..I've bothered to re-type this through two cutoffs from MSN. Greg- your point was well-taken, despite the criticism. We can all do better than we BOTHER to. Yup, me too! We need to take pride and satisfaction in the job we do. I see a parallel in that and the success of this country. We have the freedom to succeed, and with all the bleeding hearts telling us to feel guilty about 'why do other countries hate us'- my answer is this: Liberty does not have to apologize for success!. That success is delineated in everything we do- from helping someone who is trying to get his tractor running right, to helping our neighbor in time of need, or helping those across the world, to achieve as much as we have attained. So, to all you bellyachers, what have you done for anyone lately, except bellyache?

I surely did walk into a buzz saw on this one. My original post was worded so as to not offend anyone. Or so I thought!. I am truly sorry that so many were offended by my comments. It appears that this thread is too sensitive a subject to many. I did not intend to insult anyone's intelligence. People on this website are well-intentioned, honest, hard-working folk, who, at least in my opinion, tend to get a little lax in their spelling and use of grammar. This is not to say that anyone is a stupid hick. I am a stupid hick, but still enjoy an article more when I can readily read and understand the thoughts of the author. There is much useful information on this website, which I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate. There is also some BS, which I find mostly entertaining. I apologize to those of you who were offended. I am truly sorry that you were offended. In the future, I will keep such comments to myself. All the best..... Greg

I can't believe that so many people took the position of defending a lack of skills using our native language. It's not something I would have bothered commenting on myself, but I do try to do the best I can because I think it reflects poorly on me to make errors. I think we should try to do the best we can to put our best foot forward - the same way we comb our hair, take a bath once in a while, etc. And when I have to resort to using spell check, I try to learn from it when it corrects me.

And now, since I am on the same popularity curve as "Dillon" and Osama bin Laden, I will have to learn to fix my tractor and put the wheels back on my house all by myself!! LOL. All the best to you and yours..... ...Greg

Well, I do OK with a rifle but that's a mite far for me. Besides, I'm an old desert rat. And most around here think I'm a little off anyhow.

No wheels under your house? Man, with all this commotion, you'd best get 'em back on. Sometimes mobile is GOOD. I still have a little place around Nutrioso if you need to hide out for awhile. And speaking of offending, I'm told I have a West Virginia state flower up behind the house. You know, with the wires going to the TV.

I don't imagine that anyone has ever mentioned to you that you're a bit "wordy"? Actually, the point of your message is pretty simple. Any real reason for dragging it out so much? In my own experience I've found fellas like yourself to be a bit insecure and as a result they tend to overcompensate somewhat for this shortcoming in their personality. Would you agree with me? Hope I didn't make any spelling errors.

Shoot, I was county spellin' bee champ in 1970, and I could probably spell you under the table, but it sure doesn't bother me any to read the posts here. After all, the information is free, the folks posting are, for the most part, quite knowledgeable in their areas of expertise, and as long as I can piece together their meaning, I'm quite satisfied. After a while, you get to recognize which individuals you can rely on for good information, whether they communicate in the King's English, colloquialisms, slang, jargon, or just plain bad grammar and spelling. I sure wouldn't dream of criticizing someone who is going out of their way to help me out.

I tend to ignore the occasional misspellings and punctuation errors, but I feel that the people that type almost incoherant nonstop ramblings that never end, are just too lazy to spend a couple of minutes proofreading their postings. Am I going to fix my previous rambling sentence? No! Lol!

i think after numberous years of hitting the job scene I don,t have to worry about spelling. Seems like you could use something to take up your time instead of correcting papers.I may mispell words but I feel I have made it in the world today. remember we have been out of school 40 -50 years

In an area where one claims expertise, correct spelling of the word terms of that discipline do help develop confidence in the claimed expertise. In my case, I have very limited typing skills and that introduces some errors. But I apply discernment in reading the answers. Sometimes a poorly worded, poorly spelled response will have a bit of knowledge that helps me. I have seen some well presented responses that are completely devoid of knowledgeable content. So if a response helps, welcome. If not, dismiss it from my mind. The answers that are pure BS are the ones that bother me most-bad information can be dangerous.

Some are honest typo errors, most of us understand the lingo and dont make an issue of the errors. However if we all were spelling Bee pro's then no-one could complain. Lots of helpful information is posted here. Which proves to me if you miss-spell a word, that does not make you illerate.

I usually try to spell correctly, however I once dropped a cigarette on my keyboard and the c v d and f are slightly melted and deformed causing them to stick jam or otherwise not perform as intended. I am also a lousy typist using at the most four or five fingers. The third reason that some words in my posts may be misspelled is because I am an ignerant country hick with only 14 yrs of education which I am sure is more than some folks that answer our questions on this fine board were able to garner.
Your post smacks of elitism which really has no place here. Look at it this way, If your wife had a flat on the side of the road who would be more likely to stop and help A lawyer with 6 years of college and two degrees or some guy in a 83 Taurus with 4 kids an 8th grade education who has been spending the last 30 years patching his car and home together on a blue collar income.
