After sniffing around and getting opinions from a couple of different sources, I went ahead and ordered a Drill Doctor 500.

It came today. I watched the video carefully and then went out to the shop and fired it up. Perfect results, first time. Works just like advertised, and it's idiot proof.

And I should know, I'm just the idiot to prove it. If you're in the market for such a thing, I recommend it without reservation.

Sounds good. What does it cost? How long do you think a stone for it will last and what do they cost? I've got a box of dull and broke bits free from the last job(I miss the free stuff). How close can you chuck a broke bit to sharpen?

Thanks

I got mine from Amazon.com, $110 including shipping. It'll take bits down to 3/32nds, and probably a couple of inches long. I had no problem chucking up the shortest bit I had. The diamond wheel is supposed to be good for up to "200 sharpening cycles" and can be turned over, so I'd say that estimate is conservative.

Haven't priced a replacement wheel, but being diamond coated, I doubt they're cheap.

That sounds reasonable. Considering what bits cost, it oughta pay for itself. I may have to stop by the old jobsite and see if anybody is collecting them now. They used to trash 'em and I'd get 'em.

Looks like that dang Fawteen would just let us ship him our bits and he'd sharpen them for us to see if we like it before putting out all that money.

I still got Red's plastic money yuppie number to pay the shipping. If ye need it just holler and I'll email it.

I have used them both at home and at the job. have sharpened over a thousand bits on the same wheel. Only secret? don't be real aggressive, take it easy and always sharpen at 135 degrees and split the point, this prevents walking as the split point makes the bit self centering. have a good un, KEITH

Also, the 135 degree angle shortens the length of the cutting edge which reduces the thrust required(your arm don't get tired so fast)and increases both yours and the bits life. Keith

Thanks for the "tips" (arrrr, arrrr) Keith. As my drills need to be sharpened, I'll do that.

BTW, I happened to be surfing and found replacement wheels for $20, which I call quite reasonable.

Burr, ga'head and ship me your bits, be glad to sharpen 'em. 'Course, to ensure quality control, I'll hafta do some extensive test driving on 'em afore I ship 'em back...
