Harbor Freight sand blaster.

Someone had asked about the H-F sandblaster a while back so here's the report.

I got the 40 lbs portable model while it was on sale for $49.99. It has and unconditional replacement warranty for 1 year. I figgered at that price if it did'nt work I could cut the ends out and build a smoker.

It works fantastic. If you intend to use play sand from Home Depot or Lowe's all you need to do is run the sand through some window screen to get the clods out and it does fine.

I use mine with a 5hp Cambell air comp with 26 gallon tank.

It took 3 of the 50 lbs sacks of play sand to do the grill,hood, and fuel tank of a 35 Ferguson and 2 sacks to strip the fenders. The sand cost $2.65 each at the local Home Depot.

All in all it was a very economical way to get the tractor ready for painting.

Do all the small blasters use the same size tip? I read on here a while back to use 3/32"dia. carbide tip....where do you get them and about how much do they cost?....thanks

The replacement tips come 10 packs and in 2 sizes, about $14.00. I get silica sand from Ace or from a local lumber yard for $5.00 for 80#, it's for sand blasting. These tips wear rapidly in use and the shutoff at the nozzle will not work after a while. They have a replacment valve of a different type available however haven't gotten around to it yet. Fine nozzles work on silica best.

This one came with 4 tips. They arent marked but they look like from about 1/8" up to about 3/8" or so. Give or take 1/2" either way.

I wish we had a Meijers around here for the sand.

I have heard, HOME DEPOT has good sand in 40 # bags..(garden dept.)...they also said to screen the lumps out ,through window screen..... ..

I just bought a Crafsman 100# portable sand blaster today. I odered the compressor from the catalog so it will be a week or two before I get it. I'll let you all know how it works. If you have a Meijer's store nearby they usually have sand for a buck a bag less than the places that sell Quickrete or Sacrete brands. I'm just doing implements to start off with so I don't need the fancy sand or walnut shells.

I've got that model, but have never used it. I did put it together. I've got a truckload of stuff that needs blasting. I can't find my bag of roundtuits though. Maybe next week!

TO ALL SANDBLASTER USERS,
I HAVE A LARGE CABINET TYPE, HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT NOT TAKING OFF MATERIAL VERY GOOD. COMPRESSOR WAS AT ONE END OF GARAGE, BLASTER AT OTHER CORNER,AIR RUNNING THRU A 1\2 HOSE. I PUT ME A SMALL AIR TANK UNDER THE BLASTER CABINET(A SURGE TANK IF YOU WILL) NOW I HAVE PLENTY OF AIR VOLUME AND IT WORKS GREAT!

Hey, Burr, thanks for the evaluation. I had been thinking of getting one of those myself, but I figured I'd wait for an independent evaluation (I'm also broke at the moment, which makes it a lot easier to put off purchases). Did you try recycling the sand thru the screens to get more mileage out of it?

Try silica sand from home depot, it's sized for blasting with a 1/8inch tip.I screen and reuse the sand 3 or 4 times, but it does get finer with each use. I made a screen with a 2x4 frame and house bug screen sized to sit on a trash can. I put a small motor with a offset weight-water bed vibrator, on the frame so that you don't have to shake the screen to get the sand through. I also put a trash bag in the can. This is super easy and almost free! Once you have used a pressure pot type blaster and this recycle setup you will throw your siphon blaster away. Try IT Good Luck d3 Mike

Naw Fred I did'nt recycle. I think it would work okay.

I had all my plastic and tarps over everything else here trying to ride out the monsoon or I'd have tried it.
