The main thing to do is clean the part as best you can before you put it in the parts washer. We have a terrible time in our shop with idiots that will pull an oil and dirt covered part off and throw it right in the solvent tank. If the part is going to be completely disassembled, or I can plug off any openings, it goes to the pressure washer first. Good hot water will generally do a better job of cleaning than solvent, anyway.

All of our parts washers have 2'x3' tanks setting on 30 gallon drums. We placed a concrete block in the bottom of the drum, off to one side and set an tractor engine air filter upside down on the block. The pump sets down inside the filter. We fashioned a trough to divert the solvent from the tank drain away from the filter. The solvent flow from the drain, into the tank, through the filter to the pump. This catches the "big stuff". To make the solvent clearer, we run the solvent through a clay bag filter overnight once a week.

Depends partly on the type of washer you have. On the old Graymills unit, I made a 4" wide sheetmetal pan to set in the end opposite the pump. This allowed the sediment trays to move under the edge of the baffle on the pump housing. Next step was to lay some bar stock across the trays every 6" or so to act as baffles and keep the fluid on the bottom from flowing so rapidly toward the pump. Slowing the fluid return flow a little at the bottom of the tank allows the dirt to settle better. Some units can be easily adapted to install an oil filter for a car on the pump.

I made a 1/8 aluminum plate to cover the intake for the pump, drilled holes in it equal to the size of the port, put a 1/4" threaded rod through it, with a nut on each side, added a small air filter to it and covered it with another plate held on with a wing nut, be sure that you are not on the bottom of the tub so that the large stuff will not clog the filter so quickly, has worked good so far.
