I know this is off the tractor subject, but you folks have proven to be a wealth of information. Does anyone know where to buy tinplate (either electoplate or hot dipped) for use in making sconces, lamps, etc? Thank you in advance for your help. Gordo

Available from McMaster Carr: (not cheap)

www.mcmaster.com/

Tinning Paste Suitable for bearing surfaces, a thin coating of this compound serves as a bonding agent when you use it with babbitt metal for relined bearing shafts. Use it with bronze, cast iron, and steel to help keep babbitt lining from lifting. Composition is 75% 50/50 powdered solder and 10% zinc chloride. The remaining 15% is a balance between zinc oxide and water. Paste comes in 1-lb. cans. 9006K42 Each $38.46

Gordon , I use painted tern valley material from my lumberyard, it comes in a roll and they cut off only what I need , and it's cheap , and I can get it NOW , hey the old guys used what they could get and so can we, this material is used for valley and around chimneys (to flash them) on houses , you will need to remove the "paint" it resembles dried glue , use turpentine and a scotchbrite pad , I also use this in my punched tin cabinet reproductions , the ladies flip over punched tin

Try www.metcosupply.com Look on pages about 57-65
of their online catalog. These pages show various tin plates that may meet your needs. These are GREAT folks that I have ordered from many times, although not tin plate. They are quick and are one of the few that will cheerfully take small quantity orders. Dick

If nobody can come up with a source, you might try sending an email to the Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. They have a tinsmith shop in Greenfield Village, and actually sell finished products. I'm sure they will tell you their source for materials.

OK, good idea. I'm getting sites for finished products, but the raw materials are scarce.

Many thanks
