Guess I’ve been living in the STONE AGE! I’ve got about five 20lb propane tanks with the old style valves, which “they” say can’t be refilled. What’s the best way to upgrade these babies to the newer, safer type valve?

Thank goodness our Gov’t. is looking after us so well! I shudder to think of the thousands of times I could have been killed by these terrible old tanks…. But they still let me buy cigarettes & booze – which they tax……yada, yada, yada.

Our local Wally World exchanges new tanks for new tanks for 12.00, new tanks for old (non-compliant) for 16.00. They will also sell new compliant, but I do not remember the price, as I had three that they would take in exchange.

Here is the correct information on LPG cylinders. This does not apply to permantly mounted "tanks". All OPD valves are constructed to NPGA specifications and may be filled by any authorized refilling station. My supplier installed new OPD valves, pressure tested the tank(30#),refilled it, and recertified it for another 8 years for $27 each. He did require me to clean and repaint the cylinders, because rusted tanks aren't supposed to be recertified.

And you can buy a new tank good for 12 years for $25. It's a 'gotcha' to retrofit/ reinspect.

Havent had to do it yet but I understand its cheaper to buy the small 20lb tanks and cost efficent to convert the larger ones. Check with your propane refill store.

cheaper and safer to just replace tanks 20 bucks at wally mart. Tanks are supposed to be pressure tested and re certified every 10 years. Rhino will trade old for new filled one for 17 bucks. HOWEVER you may not be able to refill them just any old place. some appear to need special refill equipment rhino will continue to exchange tank for tank for something like $10 per.

you could replace the valves or I think someone said you could get adapter. but if they are out of date tanks nobody will fill them.

Welding suppliers may still fill old style as long as you claim its for your welder.

D.O.B. - our local propane supplier graciously offers to convert old style tanks over with the new valves for a mere $20 per tank.

Don't be silly go to Walmart and buy a new one. Certification is good for 12 years. Take your old one by your nearest propane dealer and ask him to dispose of it. If he refuses bring it back after dark and leave it for him. He knows what to do with it.

Our local recyling center will take the old tanks if you remove valve after you have used all the gas up.

Guess what My brother works at a place that takes all these old nonfillable tanks sandblasts them replaces the old valves with the new (about 3 bucks a piece)pressure tests them, then they put the decal of whatever tank trade co (Rhino, etc) contract they happen to be filling that day and they are on their merry way to you.
