I have a generator that lost it's magnetizium and so can not self excite. Does anyone know the procedure to re-magnetize the field coil of a 120/240 volt generator?

I just got one out of the shop - the guy said that what often happens is a generator sits without being run for a year or so and it looses the magnetism. Mine had a bad diode - usually caused by overspeed. I didn't have time to rebuild the carb myself so I took it to a shop. Apparently they overspeed it after they got it running.

Richard: My book sez if there is a loss of residual magnetism, (no voltage build-up) to re-excite---
Use 6V drycell lantern battery.
Remove brush cover.
Start engine with no load.
Attach the "-" neg lead to neg brush and then briefly touch the "+" pos lead of batt. to pos. brush.
Remove as soon as voltage builds up. To check voltage, use a plug in volt meter.
Hope this helps in your predicament. Mac...

have seen it done by using the 2 hot wires(on 1 plug)for the 240 volt side.guy hooked up a good 12volt battery(took it out of his truck)& shorted through the plug for about 5 to 10 seconds.seemed to work fine after that.he said lost magnetism was usually caused by repeatedly running out of fuel or shutting it down while still under load.also said that usually fixed em...don't know much bout em myself.

Go to precise engine repair, sorry can't find the exact link. Used to be p.e.r.com. Lots of good info and experts there.
