Ok, a subject covered to death - again.

Got a couple of outbuildings that need paint. Corn crib - now. Big barn - in a year or 2. Couple smaller sheds somewhere in there. Also lots of smaller projects, hayracks, deck to waterproof, etc.

So, what am I looking for? I hear pretty luke-warm comments on the Wagner Power Painter deals - there are different models it seems, any that do work ok?

Folks here have suggested an air painter - but I'm so dumb, what exactly does that mean?

I see some gadgets at Sam's & the Home places that look like a paint can slips in, with a tube down into the paint can area, for maybe $200-300. These do anything?

What do I want? don't want to go into it professionally, but don't want to waste money & not get anything done either...

Painted a barn a few years back with a Wagoner PowerPainter. That was a lot like work! If there was one positive thing, I would run out of paint about the same time I had to move the ladder for new surface to paint anyway! I've used my power painter so much that the piston is badly worn - need a new one.... Anyone know where I can get one? Retailers and paint stores don't handle them around here!

Howdy, I believe what your looking for is an airless type paint sprayer. These machines are basicly a high pressure pump that forces paint through a small orfice and into a fan spray. There are two main types: the larger professional models usually called an airless sprayer and the small, self-contained homeowner type usually called a "power painter" though that is just a brand name. The "power painter" things are basicly for shooting light materials such as varish on small items; furniture etc. Any type of unthinned paint doesn't work that well. In fact, for latex paints a power painter is even slower than roller/brush IMO. The professional type airless handles heavy bodied paints well, unthinned latex is no problem. Most of these units pump about 1/3 gallon or more a minute. They have a pump setup with a suction tube for a paint can and a trigger wand with high pressure hose connection. This is probably what you saw at the store. This is truely the fastest way to tackle big jobs. Cleanup for latex amounts to disasembling the trigger gun, flushing the unit and hoses with water, and wiping off any splatters. Pretty easy... An air type sprayer consists usually of a gun with a paint cup that connects to an air compressor. These are usually used for lighter paints such as machinery enamel and car paints. They give a fine finish but don't handle thick paints at all. I'm not sure about the hayrack (wood or metal?) but the deck can be waterproofed with a garden sprayer. It sounds like your big projects are the buildings. My wagner (505 I think) is a medium sized airless and I really like it. It was in the $300-350 range and it was worth every penny. I've painted about 4 complete houses so its paided its dues. If you decide to buy, get 1-2 extra hoses. Gives you a much greater reach to spend more time painting and less time moving the unit. Get a respirator. Paint fumes stink really bad when airborne.

Check with the local rental stores or Home Depot
and rent one instead of buying. Might be cheaper
in the long run.

Paul,
I bought a Graco Magnum XR5 from Home Depot last fall. I use it to paint barn/out building roofs, gates, barn siding, metal corn crib, wood fences, etc. I'm well satisfied with it. Clean up is allot easier than I thought to. Here's a link to their site Graco .

I also bought the Graco Magnum XR5 at HD and man did it work good. I was told to get one with a piston instead of a diaphram as as the diaphram get older it stretches and then rips. Were as the piston one lasts a long time when maintained. The xr5 has a hose you drop in a bucket of paint, you plug the unit in and go to spraying. For cleanup it has an adapter to hook up a garden hose to run water through it. I painted the whole inside, ceilings and all, of a house(Rent House) in less than a day. I removed the blades from the ceiling fans and taped off anything I didn't want painted. Man it was great. Good Luck with your choice.

That's basicly what I do with mine with similar results. I've sprayed 30 gallons in a weekend, stopping once to change colors. Airless is great!
