I have this 10HP tecumseh on a 5000Wt generator, really noisy. Has anyone had any experience in the installation of a quiet muffler. Jack had one for this engine and was wondering if it was a can of worms to install.

I think the problem with a good muffler is the weight. Since they are usually mounted on rubber shocks they vibrate a lot and a large muffler would break from stress. I would take a peice of 3/4 water pipe to a flexible pipe to a Motorcycle muffler lying on bricks. Who cares what it looks like if you can't see it from an airplane.

I have a 10 hp coleman w/briggs thats real noisy ,it too has a teeny little muffler.ice last winter broke power lines and it ran 24/7 for 15 days, bout drove us nuts.piece of crap vibrated itself apart twice .got a good price at sams club $365 if it wasn't for the price I would have been real disapointed in it.I added a 1/4 plate under the engine going all the way back to the gen and mounted it all together, since then the bolts all stayed put.but still noisy!thought about an old motorcycle muffler.

Got an 8hp Briggs/Coleman. Great generator - has held together exceptionally well, and like the fellow below, ran it solid for a week when we had a doracho wind come thru here a few years back. The only complaint is that noisy muffler, and it's not terribly portable. Gotta add some wheels! The rubber pads on the bottom of the roll cage do a wonderful job of absorbing the vibration. Have a couple of old military surplus generators, which I place on an old tire to keep them from walking all over the shop!

Before you go to a lot of trouble, be sure the noise is from the muffler. An awful lot is usually radiated directly from the motor and the fans.

Don: There is a lot of motor and fan noise but a goodly percentage is coming from the rinky-dink flat muffer. Thanks.
