: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : I'm trying to pump water with a 3HP B/S. It's about four years old, was used two years ago. A few days ago I changed the oil and it cranked right up. Will run forever under no load, but the least load and it stops. Any ideas why it will not run under load? Thanks.. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Is the govenor air vane free to move and still connected to the carb? : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Yes. I have held it open and it still quits as soon as the load starts. : : : : : : : : : : : : : Could be running to lean, is a diaphram carb? The rubber diaphram might have dried up and cracked. : : : : : : : : : : : : Replaced the diaphram. If I choke it or give it a spray of starting fluid when it starts down, it dosen't help. : : : : : : : : : : : Make sure that the flywheel magnets and the coil legs are free of rust as this will affect the timing : : : : : : : : : : : and could cause what you discribe. : : : : : : : : : : Sanded and cleaned the flywheel, replaced the coil. Nothing I have done, changes anything. Can't afford another motor. I appreciate the help. : : : : : : : : : Make absolutely certain that there isn't something wrong with the pump that makes it too much load to pull. If it starts easily, that will usually (but not always) rule out spark or compresson problems. If you can run it with no load, does it respond quickly and normally to suddenly opening the throttle? : : : : : : : : : I don't think there is anything wrong with the pump. As soon as the pump primes, the motor acts as if the throttle was closed. : : : : : : : Yes, it responds quickly to the throttle under no load. : : : : : : Have you changed the spark plug? ( I'm sure you have but gotta ask ). Above posts all right on, we seem to be running out of ideas. It does'nt sound like this engine has much time on it,can't be much wrong with it. Plug wire look OK? fresh gas? : : : : : New Spark Plug, New Plug Wire with coil and Fresh Gas. Come daylite, I'll try D.C.Dale's idea. : : : : Had a 5 HP Briggs a while back that would run but lacked power. Turned out to be that the exhaust valve had a negative clearance causing low compression. : : : : I lapped in the valves and reset the clearance then it ran fine. : : : Another straw to grasp at if you haven't already checked it is to check if the flywheel has spun on the crank (the little zinc keystock did what it was designed to do). If the pump sucked a rock and came to a sudden stop or if the rock went through but not before the keyway sheared ?? : : : Kinda rare (so I've been told) but I fixed two last year like that. One was only sheared half way through but that was enough and the other was a complete shear, but just barely. Both ran fine freewheeling but fell on their face when loaded. : : More good ideas, I bet you can tear this thing down while your asleep! : I can field strip a 3hp B&S before you can say "scat", and that is no BS. I thank each and everyone of you. Thanks for the help. I give up. There is nothing wrong with it, just won't work ;). When, if I find the trouble, I'll be sure and post the answer. Thanks again. NUTS!
