Prefabbed Chimney/Fireplace/Woodstove Question

I have an existing "Preway" prefabbed fireplace and chimney. This unit is old and is in the basement. I want to connect a freestanding Fischer woodstove to the 8" flue of this unit. Is it possible or is there a safety issue here?

Thanks,
Jack

Let me know if you would be interested in selling the chimney kit. 505-866-5878

It might work fine, especially if you seldom use it. I would check with a stove contractor who has a lot of experience for an opinion.

I also would carefully examine the chimney. I am not familiar with the Preway brand, but have some experience with a Metalbestos chimney. We had one in an older mobile home that we recently sold. I was concerned with the safety of the woodstove and chimney and did not sell them with the mobile home. When I disassembled the chimney sections, I discovered that there were large holes in the inner liner of the lowest section of chimney that mated to the woodstove. Now that stove had been used extensively for more than 15 years, and there had been times when the fire was real hot. But I never knew that there was a problem with that chimney section until I took it apart. Was it a fire hazard? I think so and I am very glad I did not sell it to the young family that bought the mobile home.

At the time I put the woodstove in the mobile home, it was one of the best ones available, and the Metalbestos chimney was supposed to be the best prefab chimney. It cost a lot more than triple wall. I never had any problems with creosote buildup, which my friends with triple wall chimneys did. But all of the prefab chimenys that I have seen used thin stainless steel for the liner and it can wear out, warp or break.

I would suggest reading your insurance policy to make sure you are covered if you have a woodstove. Most insurance companies charge more if you have one. Maybe you have been paying for your fireplace all along. However if you discuss this with your insurance agent and they did not know about the fireplace, your rates may go up.

Good luck.

It could probably be done. Being safe is one thing, but house fire insurance is another. Being in accordance with your home owners fire insurance ussually means having triple wall pipe. Not sure what the guidlines are on going from stove pipe to chimney. The smart thing to do would be check with your insurane carrier if you have insurance on your home and see what there guidlines are becuase if you don't and do something not up to there guidlines you might end up without coverage if God forbids something goes wrong. It has been my experience that insurance rates go up when they here wood burning stoves and that triple wall pipe all the way from basement to roof top is expensive.
