Mix oil ratios

Hopefully by the end of this week I'll be about ready to fire up one of my old snowmobiles that I've been rebuilding, this one got new rings and seals and a clean fuel tank.
The thing is I don't want to mix up a full 5 gallon can of gas and just have it sit around until the snow flies. I was thinking more of a gallon or two. This is a 20:1 sled, though I'll probably play with that mix this winter, but for the first few runs its going to get 20:1 sure enough.

Now, 20:1 is easy with a 5gal can, 1qt, 5 gallons of gas.
To get the same mix for 2 gallons, I don't feel like working the math, somebody must have the chart for ounces to one gallon by ratio. I've seen them before but can't remember where.

Thanks.

I would run 20:1 mix in it. between my dad and I, we have 40 some vintage sleds. 1963-1980 is the range of the sleds we have. we run that mix in all of our sleds and if we run NGK plugs, we rarely ever foul them out. Its usually caused by improper carb setting that does it. You should get one of thoes ratio-rite cups. i use one for mixing up small amounts of gas, and once you figure out how they work they are quite handy.

With the new and improved two cycle oils on the
market these days I'm not so sure you want to
make your mixture a 20:1 mix. Some oils if mixed that heavy would sure foul plugs. Might ask at
a snowmobile shop, those guys know for sure and
won't steer you wrong. The older sleds called for a20:1 mix, but I believe that was because the oils
at that time were recomended by the manufacture
to be a 20:1 oil. The lubricants now are much more improved, and many recomend a 40:1 or 50:1 mix.
Might ask someone who really would know.

We've discussed it a time or two over at the sled shop. The general idea we had was to start with the manufacturers suggested and then step leaner from there and see what happens.
The sled ran good with 20:1 until sludge from the gas tank ended the game so it seems like a good place to start. Then I'll probably step to 24:1, run a couple gallons of that and see what happens. If it runs hot and/or the plug doesn't look good it'll be back to 20:1, if things are still okay maybe I'll stay there for awhile or maybe try 32:1. Supposedly you can take it all the way to 50:1 but I'm not sure I want to, it'll all depend on what happens at each step.

Same as F14 says,

128 oz divided by 20 = 6.4 oz for 1 gallon

256 oz divided by 20 = 12.8 oz for 2 gallons

I think..... ...?

I've got an old Pennzoil outboard oil bottle I keep around just cuz it has the chart on the back.

Ratio - oz/gal 16:1 - 8 24:1 - 5 32:1 - 4 50:1 - 3

Doesn't have your 20:1, but my calculator sez it would be 6.4

Thanks Fawteen, thats getting printed and posted in the sled shed, and a copy in the truck too. Thats when you really need it, oil should be put in at the gas station so it can slosh around on the trip back to the house and be good and mixed.
