After trying to find a replacement gas tank for my John Deere A, it looks like I may have to repair or replace the entire top half the gas tank...it is really bad...mostly rusted away. I am experienced with all types of welding and brazing but have little experience with repairing gas tanks. What would you do? I am really open for any and all suggestions.
Thanks,
Tommy Boy

If the tank has SOME metal in it, like if the holes are 1" or smaller check out POR-15, www.por15.com and their tank sealing kits.
Hint, get the bigger kit, its worth it. I need to get another small can of sealer, my 4 gal snowmobile tank isn't quite done with one small can.

The first thing I would do is ask the guys on the JD page for help finding a used tank....I don't know what the tank looks like, but if you think you can replace the top half ,then coat the inside with the epoxy tank sealer.....I think J.C.Whitney sells a kit....( www.jcwhitney.com ) their order number is 1-800-529-4486 ....If the tank isn't just falling apart you may get the loose rust off by puting a 1/2 gallon of nuts and bolts in the tank and shaking it around to beat the rust off....then using the epoxy to recoat the entire inside of the tank.....

Instead of a half gallon of nuts and bolts, I use old cross chains from tire chains. They do the same job and are MUCH easier to get out out of the tank when you are finished. Just take a coat hanger and pull them out. My $.02

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I actually have pinholes and a hole about the size of 8X15 inches on the top. All of these suggestions will help me in my quest for gas tank. Thanks again....Tommy Boy

There are a lot of salvage yard with A's in them depending on where you are. A hole that big would be simplest to get another tank from the scrapyard. There is a salvage yard listing on ATIS.net site and more out there still. Green Maga$ine is a good site for advertisers who carry them. What year A? Where are you located?
