Need to get spare key made for 1999 Ford Explorer
The owners manual say's you need a smart key? The key looks like regular key, Is this a scam for the Ford dealer's to get $50.00 out of your pockets (the theives) Thanks Dave F.

I AM A PARTS MANAGER AT A FORD DEALER AND I ASSURE YOU THIS IS NO SCAM. IT IS AN ANTI-THEFT DEVICE THAT SAVES YOU MONEY ON THE INSURANCE. HOWEVER IF YOU LOOSE YOUR KEYS IT IS EXPENSIVE TO HAVE THEM REPLACED. IF YOU HAVE TWO THAT WORK YOU CAN PROGRAM A THIRD YOURSELF, BUT IF YOU GET DOWN TO 1 THE WHOLE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM HAS TO BE PROGRAMED. AND IF YOU LOSE THEM ALL TOGETHER YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A DEALER TO GET IT RE-PROGRAMED. JUST REMEMBER, THE DEALER IS NOT THE ONE LOSING YOU KEYS SO DONT COME UNGLUED ON THEM WHEN THEY FIX YOUR PROBLEM AND HANDYOU THE BILL!

Mark, I really didn't care for your arrogant, responce, Iam glad I don't have to do bussiness, at your dealership. How would you like to pay $50.00 for an .89 Key. (I don't think so.) I just asked for information. & most of the saleman I talked to don't have their cars serviced at their dealers because they are to expensive. So Have good Day. Dave F.

DAVE FOR ONE THING IT ISNT AN .89 CENT KEY. AND DEALERS ARE THERE TO HELP BUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU SEEM TO THINK THAT BECAUSE OF THE INCONVENIENCE AND EXPENSE YOU HAVE CAUSED YOURSELF BY LOSING YOUR OWN KEYS YOU SHOULD TREAT THE DEALERSIP PEOPLE LIKE THEY ARE ROBBING YOU.

Mark, using all-caps to type on the internet generally means you are shouting at the othyer person. Considering you are coming on rather strong to begin with, the use of all-caps is a rather poor choice - I'd think twice about using your dealership as well. No one said they lost a key. It is pretty comon to have a his; hers; & spare key for a vehicle. Many keys you can get made for a buck. Some you have to shell out $50 for it seems. And still, all the cars get stolen.....

Chill a bit, & try to help people. Original dealers always over-charge for their services. Or NAPA & the other auto parts suppliers would not exsist. Just how business is done in the USA.

Mark, Look I bought an 1999 Ford Explorer at an Ford Dealer, In Pittsburgh I won't Mention the dealer,s name I got only one key from them for this vechicle, I felt they should have given me the key instead of charging me. $50.00. So drop it. Dave F.

Dave, I also agree that the dealer should have given you two keys. He knew that both would be necessary. With the markup on used cars, he certainly could have afforded it.

dave i agree you should have gotten 2 keys. we always give our used car customers 2 to get started. just please understand that as you are venting about the price of the key wich is very high i just wanted you to know from a parts person side that we usually get treated very poorly by people who have lost their keys and need to replace them or have the system reprogramed. we truley strive to give the customer what they need in a courteus fashion and when we do this and are in return treated poorly it is just as frustrating to us as the price of the key is to the customer. i am not trying to start a war with you or anyone. i am a farm boy who loves tractors and just happens to work at a ford dealer. hope you have a great day and good luck with your explorer.

I have a 99 Ranger and I got a spare key at my local Ace Hardware for $15 and I had to have my two original keys and programmed it myself. There was an instruction sheet from the hardware store and also in my owners manual on how to do it and it works fine.

$50 is the standard price for a Ford Dealership on the coded key.

Depending on the Ford vehicle you need the code key to at least work the ignition, on some you need the code key to unlock the doors manually. In the next year or so you will need the code key to unlock the doors on all Ford's.

The price of the key is a bit of a shock, but the discount I get for 'anti-theft' on my insurance each time the premium is due for my truck more than paid for the 1 extra key I wanted to have.

Dave, the key has the chip built into the plastic on the end of it; like Mac said, you have to have it for the car to start. It's an antitheft device. $50 does sound a little steep. I know a guy who went to a locksmith to have one made and the blank cost $30. Dunno how much it cost to have the key programmed.

On my Ford Ranger you can program the key yourself, IF you have 2 working keys.

My dealer told me it was $50 if I had both keys and much more if I had only one. He said a locksmith could make a 3rd key if I had original two.

Dave:
If this key has the chip on it, they are more costly than a regular key. But I was thinking like 25 bucks. A regular key cut the same will not work. Gotta have that chip. Thats why a guy is reluctant to get an extra set of keys from the dealer as in years gone by.

make sure you have no magnet on your key chain this will interupt the chip. this is what i was told.
i took my mobil speed pass key off that ring and put on another just to be safe.
this what i was told don't know how true it is.
