Repairing Automatic oiling on Poulan Chainsaw

Ive never worked on a chainsaw before. Im going to guess that the nechanism is located up inside the saw where the blade wraps - and gets oiled. Any tips on seeing if it is working or what have you.

The other guys have given you good advice, especially about cleaning the bar groove, you would be surprised how much oil can seemingly be sucked up by a compacted layer of sawdust in the groove. Run the saw with the bar off and see if oil is pumping before you tear it apart. You will probably find a plastic gear behind the clutch on this saw that drives the oiler. These plastic gears can be stripped if alot of sawdust and oil is allowed to build up in there. Russ

Check the oil filter in the oilreservoir too. There is probably a filter at the end of a hose that is clogged.

First check if the bar groove and oiler port are clear. Take off the bar and chain and clean out the groove that the chain runs in. There will be a small hole in the bar near where it attaches to the saw. Make sure the hole is clear-this is where it picks up the oil from. Them clean off the hole where the oil comes out of the saw. This may solve your problem without actually working on the oiler itself.

I have a Sears version Poulan...oiling problem drove me nuts.....cleaned everything. Then I found the "check valve" opening for the oil tank. It requires that one pull the recoil unit...then look near the oil fill hole and there is a brass screen. I cleaned it with air and a small engine carb cleaner spray (doesn't disolve plastic) and blew it out again (remove oil before you do this folks)and it works now. As near as I can see, this "part" is two pieces....one called a "vent plug" the other a "check valve". Looks like you have to destroy the plug to get at the check valve, then reassemble with new parts (about $5 for both). Go look as your model may have this arrangement....try cleaning it first.
