OK Rod , There is so much involved , I would be here all night. So I'm going to point you in the right direction for now. If you have any questions , feel free to E-mail me any time through out your project. I personally would stay away from any lumber company siding. you would have to work with many brands of siding to understand and feel the difference in the quality between lumber company siding and siding bought from a siding wholesale supplier. Vinyl sidings evolved a lot over the years. Good brand names became bad , and bad brands became good. Many went out of business. some brands bought out other brands. And so on , and so on. Like the other post mentioned; the middle of the line siding is the same quality as the upper line of siding. The difference is not the quality of the material. The difference isthat the middle of the line is solid vinyl/solid color. When you step up from the middle of the line , your talking blended colors , laminated sidings , darker color sidings. Darker colors have more fade dampening ingredients. Some sidings have a sun block to help prevent fading. Heartland vinyl siding is one of them. Other sidings are putting fade warrantees on the siding , saying there panel will not fade any more than 3 shades. I believe Alside vinyl siding is one of them. Like I said , this could go on and on. Here are the sidings I use. Certainteed Main Street , Certainteed monogram , Wolverine American Ledgend , Alside Oddessey. Certainteed has the most colors. All three brands are good middle of the line sidings. There are many others. Stick to a siding thickness of .042--.o46. The thinner panels are kind of skimpy. The thicker panels absorb to much heat. Dow board is the best insulation behind vinyl siding. Use 3/4" dow board. It is tounge& grooved. Do not use foil faced insulation behind vinyl siding. It reflects too much heat back to the siding. If your in a windy area , TYVEK house wrapp is the best. It does make a big difference by blocking the wind. Use TYVEK tape on the joints. When it comes to the aluminum for wrapping fascial boards , window and door frames , etc. , use PVC coated aluminum. It will hold its color and brightness much longer than non PVC coated aluminum. Make shure the J-chanel is built into the aluminum trim around the windows and doors.Use OSI caulking. The OSI quad is better yet , but does not flow good in cool temperatures. Use some kind of vented vinyl soffit material. Like one of the other post mentioned; more important than the material quality , shop around for a darn good installer. A good installer can do a good job even with lesser quality materials. Keep me posted. And don't hessitate to contact me for assistance.

My question doesn't relate directly to your topic. However, I will soon be buying a newly constructed home and I am wondering if vinyl siding is as good a siding choice as hardy plank?
If not, what are the problems with vinyl siding?
Thank you.

RC

Thanks Scott and everyone for posting. Well I originally thought I would install the siding but now thinking about it the trim will problem be hard to do without experience. I won’t a good job sow I will have to contact sum contractors. It will be a next summer project any ways. What R rating is the 3/4" dow board? My house has siding that is like fibber or preset paper than aluminum siding on top. The house whose built in the 60’s is the fiber asbestos if sow what should we do about it just leave it on and put dow board over top? What I really would like to do is remove all the siding down to bare sheathing and put the thickest dow board on the house and use TYVEK house wrap on it to because the insulation isn’t that grate I really appreciate all the suggestions every buddy Rod MI

Rod, I am not a pro, but I had supposedly real good siding installed on my house by contractor. Then I decided to do my outbuildings myself. I didnt want to spend a lot of $$, so I went for the cornings at 45$ a square. I cant honestly see any difference between it and the Contractors choice brand which was supposedly higher per square. Hearsay, but guys have told me the #2 grade is as good as the #1 grade. I did learn one important factor in all this, use a good grade of backing and tape all the seams. Do not nail siding on tight as it is supposed to hang. At least thats what I been told. The villager brand is considerably cheaper, and looks it. About 35 or 38$ a square. I dont mean to knock anyones product but that is my opinion.
Used white only as UV does not effect it to much, or at all and is easy to match. Used nails with large washers for insulation or wrap. Dont cut corners on this either, unless it is just an "old" out building. An old DIY selfer..When I can.

Rod ---- Any name brand works fine...I hope you like white, because it is the only "color" that holds up 99%...Light colors are OK,but if you have storm damage the new pieces will show up like a sore thumb...Ihave all my buildings done in white vinal, black vinal shutters and black/gray heavy/layerd shingles.....The place Looks great...CAUTION --- the installer is just as important as the sidding.....

I think the installer is even more important than the brand. The number 1 thing with vinal siding is to never drive the nails in tight.

M R is right installer is very important. Make sure they cover/plug/caulk all openings in exterior sheathing. vinyl sideing is a great replacement for paint, but does not keep insects out the way a tight wood siding does (except termites and other wood eaters). I have vinyl on a 3 year old house. each winter there are 10's of thousands of lady bugs in my house. we suck then up by the hundreds with the shop vac only to have them replaced by more. if i had sealed all the gaps around foundation and outlets I beleive my bug problem would be much less. my 2 cents
