Wanting to hook up the lights/brake wiring on a trailer I bought, it has a 7 pin r/v type connector (came with it), and noticed that the truck had a six pole plug broken, so replacing it with a 7 to match trailer. The trailer has a 7 pole and the wiring diagram I found on a url mentioned some time back on this site from "lucky B trailer parts" were all different, In trying to use their diagram of the plugs, couldn't decide if they were looking at the side of the connector where the screws fasten the wires to the connector, or if they were looking at the side where the two halves connect; that is the business end of the plug where they go together, does any one have an understandable diagram that identifies the wiring orientation? I think now I may have it backwards. Need to know which side it is referring to, whether they are referring to the wire/screw connection side of each plug, or the contact side. Would like to wire it up to some sort of standard if there is one. Right now if you look at the truck plug from the contact side, that is opening the flap and looking into it, the brakes are at 1'oclock, the right turn signal is at 3'oclock, the back up lights are at 5 o'clock, the tail light/marker lamps are at 7, the left turn signal is at 9, and the ground wire is at 11'oclock, and the center pin is vacant at the moment, although it has a 12-gauge wire to it on the truck end for some future use. I have the plug housing turned so that the flap opens from the 11 o'clock position down to the 5 o'clock position so that the flap goes down from the bumper, to keep it from hitting the bumper, realize that it is probably inverted from most people's way, but that is what it takes to mount it on the hitch reciever under the bumper on the 97 GMC 2500 series truck I have. Might need to hook up to some one elses trailer some day and would like to know wiring is compatible if it is possible to be that way. Thanks Gene

To facilitate wiring a trailer plug on your truck, a plug-in pigtail is available for your make and model of truck. Just separate the rear harness near the rear of the truck frame and plug it in. The advantage is that it is a water tight connection and it eliminates the corrosion common with pinch on wire splices. These are available from your auto supply store or RV dealer for $15 to $18

O.K. looks like I have it reversed. Truck has the factory wiring bundle under the bed. I will change wiring to match the detailed diagram included in thr response by tech 4, thanks a lot people for helping me untangle this wiry problem. Now just one more question. Does any one know why there is a 15 amp fuse and fuse holder in the wiring harness on about an 18 gauge red wire, under the left side near where the tail light harness connection is under the body/bumper area, and the wire goes up into the fender well between the inner and outer parts, pretty sure it is factory, cannot find any spliced joints in the wire. Just wondering what it is for, probably will find out on a cold rainy night when all the lights go out because of it! Thanks Gene

I have wired a few GMC/Chev trailer plugs. I dont know if the vehicle you have has a factory harness or not. Most are wrapped in a bundle under driver side of rear frame. I used the owners manual that came with veh to wire the plugs. I dont recall off hand but seems there is about 6 maybe 7 wires. Depending on what you are using. One however is for like an RV where you can keep a RV battery charged. It is fused, red and somewhat larger. Sometimes the fuse is not there. As far as the trailer in question, I would just take a 12 volt battery, a couple jumper wires and start tracing circuit that way. No fun but I have done it this way.

It would only take a few minutes to check it out and be sure. Make your own diagram. Use a battery charger for trailer and hook it up + side to each wire - one at a time, with neg to trailer ground and see what lights up. You can do the same thing with your truck, but you will need a cheap multi tester. If you don't have one, its worth $5 to $10 from radio shack, harbor freight or Ace hardware. You will only use +12v scale so you don't need any acuracy. Hook the - terminal to truck frame for ground. Turn on running lights and see which pin has +12v by touching each pin in the connector with the + end of multi tester. Mark that pin as running lights on your new diagram. Then do turn signals, etc.

Good luck. Looks like its trailer fixing season. I have a posting a few days ago.
