Hi guy's, I am working on a 1981 Fiat (Don't worry, I believe in american cars/trucks, I own a Ford Ranger as a primary high school hauler!) Anyways I am looking to see if I can use any electric fuel pump temporarily to see if I can get the motor running till I get the factory spec'd one as I don't want to dump alot of money into the car unless I know it is worth fixing as the stock pump is around 100 bucks. Any help appreciated as I want this old "sports car" to run. By the way it is a 1981 Fiat Beretone X1/9 fuel injected. Should be a Bosch fuel system. Thanks,-Brad

Get the cheap little square one and hang it on the firewall and forget the mech pump unless you just want to put one on.

The stock pump is not all that easy to get to and the little one barrel carb doesn't need much.

Been there, done it, 1980 model, bertone, 5 speed.

Still have it out in the weeds on the farm, i think.

Too long since I worked on Fiats.

If it is a carb engine any old pump.

If it is fuel injection you will need a higher pressure pump.

If you can tell what type of system, you can probably find a suitable pump from a VW parts place. They have used just about all the different Bosch systems at one time or another.
Tell me how what the system looks like and I can give you a good guess.

All fuel from one rail, or from a distributer looking thing?
Electrical connection to the injectors or not?

If it is fuel injected go to a junkyard and get a frame mounted Bosch inline pump off a mid 80,s Ford car or truck. This will provide enough fuel and pressure to run the car.

If the engine is carburated, which a '81 probably is, you can use any cheapo fuel pump plumbed in anywhere on the feed side. All you need to do is maintain some pressure to the carb, the excess goes back on the return line. I left the old fuel pump (mechanical) in place on my 84 chevy, and put the electric fuel pump in line before it. HTH

Are you talking about the pump that feeds the main fuel injection pump? If so, a cheapo Faucet electric pump would work fine. If yer talking about the fuel injection pump itself, only a true injection pump will work because of the high pressures required (40+ psi if I recall.)
