I am going to be laying some 4 inch pipe to pump water under about 20 psi. I was wondering if the 4 inch PVC drain pipe would hold up in this situation. Anyone out there have any experience doing this?

The stuff usually says "not for pressure" but there should be REAL SCH-40 available.
It should be labled for some pressure.
the larger the diameter the lower the burst pressure, so just because 1/2 or 3/4 Sch-40 holds it does not say much about 4"

On the other hand 20PSI is almost nothing.

Hmm, fill a piece with water hook it up to the air compressor. Put it REAL FAR away and see what it holds. Now cut that number in half, maybe in half again and hope for the best.
P.S. REAL FAR is about as close as you want to be to a Fragmentation Gernade!!!!!
On second thought I don't have enough air hose!

Yes, schedule 40 is available, but at the big stores this stuff is about 1/5 the price. I might test some, but the trick is to use water pressure. Then when (if) it bursts, it doesn't blow all over like a Palestinian on a bad hair day. There is a story about testing airplane fuselages in the early days--some group was using air pressure until they figured out to use water. I guess it was quite a show.

We use scheduel 40 pvc to pump sand mound septic systems, pressures can reach as high as 60 psi
I have run several airlines using pvc in commercial garages and the pressures there run at 120 psi. Besure to use a cleaner, and glue both surfaces before putting together. HTH

Manufacturers of pvc do recommend you NOT use them for high pressure lines (air compressor shop lines).
