Help : Having long used large clausing and ect. lathes and mills, I am in the need for a combination small machine for my home shop which will drill, mill and lathe. Does anyone have an idea of which brand would be best. I would like a machine which is at least 10-14 inches between centers , at least 1/2hp motor, and is easily adjusted for accuracy. I have heard mixed emotions on the china made type brands !

Thanks for any help,

Bill

I agree with the previous posters that you probably won't like the long term use of the common "combo" machines. However....I have an EMCO-MAEIR Maximat that is a gem. Unlike most of the others, the mill/drill head mounts behind the center of the lathe bed and it's pretty versatile. I have a drill press for common drilling operations, and do not use the machine as a drill, only as a lathe/mill. These machines aren't easy to find, as most probably have 30+ years of age and use on them.

Don't go with a combo unit, you'll spend all your time changing setups. Also the combo units are just not robust enough. In my case I do more milling than lathe work so a cheap lathe and a good mill were optimum. I know the combo units sound like a great idea but changing setups is a major concern.

Have a gander at http://www.practicalmachinist.com. They'd tell you that seperate machines are the only way to go, and that the all-in-one units aren't worth their cost.

BILL, IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT GET A SMITTY BILT COMBO MACHINE. THIS CHINESE BUILT CRAP IS OKAY FOR LIMITED USE BUT WHEN IT BREAKS, AND IT WILL, THEN YOU ARE IN FOR A TIME TRYING TO GET THE RIGHT PART OR THE SUPPOSEDLY RIGHT PART TO FIT. THEY JOB THOSE THINGS OUT TO THE LOWEST BIDDER AND GOD ONLY KNOWS WHO ALL BUILT STUFF FOR THEM!THIS YEAR JOE LI AND HALF HIS RELATIVES BUILT THEM, NEXT YEAR LONG SOO GOT THE CONTRACT AND MAYBE HIS MICS ARE OFF JUST A LITTLE BIT. GET THE PICTURE?

I got one of those cheep units. I bought it used for a couple of hundred bucks. It does ok on the small lathe jobs. The mill and table is not sturdy enough for hardly anything. I machine mainly aluminum and it fits my needs. In the future I going to purchase separate units.
