Can someone suggest a proper shade for general mig welding. I am haveing problems seeing what the heck I'm trying to weld through my helmet. I am welding with a Lincoln MIG 135. When I get my arc going I cannot see the line I must keep. I am useing a #10 shade lens. I can barely see the puddle. I have problems with my eyes, but I can stick weld just fine. What am I doing wrong??

What is the difference between the "puddle weld" and the "plug weld." The welds are being used in-conjunction with galvanized roof decking. Pleas reply ASAP.

After you try the #8 and you notice that you are seeing spots for awhile you might want try what they call a cheeter-it is a magnifing lens you can get at your local welding supply.as I am getting older my eyes are getting poorer I want to use the darkest lense possible.

Glad to know I'm not the only one having trouble seeing! Am using a Century 155GS wire welder - I've even tried illuminating work with 150 watt halogen work lamp at close range. Any suggestions for what shade would be best? Economy priced units a must!

HI Steve

I use a # 10 for about all of my welding, If I see spots I go to a # 12 1/4 " base metal or bigger. You can try wearing a pair of good sun glass under the shade you get to get a little differents in shade. Back ground light is my biggest thing about welded if it is sunny, makes it hard to see. Whatever you get make sure the lenses are clean and protest the shaded lense with a clear one.

Good Luck !!

I have used a #8 with a Lincoln 150 MIG for quite a few years. I think it is probably lighter than normally recommended but I found a #10 to be too dark for me...like you, couldn't see much of anything! Get a #8...I think you will find it more usable.

a #10 should be fine, but you could go all the way down to a # 8. Before I went to an automatic helmet, my favorite lens was a large area #10 gold plated. They can be found in glass or plastic. I prefer the glass, and I think that I can see the puddle and slag separate more distinctly. Now that my arms have gotten too short for reading, I put my reading glasses on under my helmet. helps me keep my head up out of the fumes. If you are dragging the weld, try pushing it. If you are pushing it, try dragging.
