Well, turns out the pump on the number two splitter just couldn't handle any pressure, so I decided to simply plumb into my International's tractor hydraulics for power. It splits ok, but I'm going to torch off the "wings" someone added onto the original wedge, as it just can't split tough stuff with them on there. Besides, they were set to split firewood into matchsticks anyhow!
We have a huge pile of donated tree trimmings at the kid's farm, and most of them are not easy splitting. The plan is to get the tough stuff with the tractor, and do the little stuff with the 5HP 3 x 20 ram splitter. Yeah, I know, summertime is not wood time, but we have the help, and we're just waiting around watching the corn grow and the fields dry up... I think I'm going to build my own splitter copying the American vertical splitter a buddy has. I have access to an 8 HP gas motor, almost new, and a pretty stout chunk of the appropriate I beam. So all I will need is pump, ram, and valve. Northern Hydraulic, here I come!Any suggestions for a good combination of parts appreciated.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I had a splitter I bult years ago, fast hitch on my restored FARMALL 400.....rigged up pull rope system on the lever....it had a 5" cylinder off a road grader.....it would split anything you put in it....for get messing with 5 or 8 HP engines, oil tanks, valves and hoses ,,,,your tractor has them all beat and trouble free.....
