Where is a good source for shim punches for punching bolt holes in shim stock material? I have exhausted all my local contacts.

Check out Harbor Freight.com item no. 46628-OCMA $16.99. They refer to it as a sheet metal disc cutter, but it's the same thing we used in the toolroom and called a shim punch.

Their latest catalog, #460-C, has free shipping on everything until Nov. 1, 2002 with a coupon. If you order by phone- 1-800-423-2567, tell the operator you have a coupon????- thats what the add states, really.

I found a nice set of "whitney-Jensen" punches a while back. Hand set -only went to 9/32. The larger lever operated punch went considerably larger in size. I have punched some stainless and pretty heavy sheet metal with the hand set. Wish now I had bought the lever job also.

Yeah, I would love to have a whitney punch, or better yet an iron worker.

I'm going to put the Whitney on my must have tool list. My neighbors will love me.

Use transfer punches and a "die" you make. Bolt two pieces of steel, about 1/4" thick, together with washers between them and drill or machine holes in this assembly the size of the holes you need, using the transfer punches and a hammer to tap the holes you need. As the "die" isn't hardened it won't last forever but will do OK. I just did this and cut shims for the main bearings on the AC WD I am working on. The closer the hole fits the punch the better.

That seems like a good design, but I had to punch .015 stainless. How thick was the shim stock you used? I ended up drilling them very carefully. It was a long, but successful process. I could drill a 1/8" hole first, then chased it with a 1/2" drill, but not all the way. Flipped the material over and repeated. Making sure not to cut all the way through. I then used a 7/16" drill, which was the size I wanted. It worked well, but man it would have been a much faster process with the shim punch.

My shims were thinner than that. Maybe only about .007. good for gaskets too. For thicker I would consider two thinner shims. Again, not a production tool, but OK for a few shims and gaskets. Punches can be a peice of steel rod too.
Guess you did OK with the drill, clamping material would keep it from getting away from you too. A Hole saw might work too if your drill press goes slow enough.
