I have a delta model 28-560 16" three wheel band saw. Don’t buy one, they pretty much suck. The rubbers on the wheels are shot and the price they want for new ones is more, than the grummy band saw is worth to me. Anybody have a good substitute?

My wheels are 6" and had the same problem. I used pieces of motorcycle inner tube (used a dirt bike one so it was heavier) on mine. Cut out a section bigger than the width of the wheel (it will get narrow as you strech it) and strech it over the wheel (have fun, it's a chore). Then I took a sharp utility blade and trimmed the rubber back to the inner lip on the wheel. I didn't expect the rubber to last as long as it has, but I was desparate. Mine has been in place for a few years and looks like it will last many more. In addition, I kept the inner tube so I can make more if they fail again.

What size wheels that thing got on it? I can get tires for my Shopsmith for about 8 bucks a wheel.

Eight bucks? I spent over a hundred but my saw's a little larger (36"). Any thoughts of getting a "real" saw? I found out that everything's saleable, even the all-plastic piece of crap that my father bought. Felt kind of guilty taking the money even though I had two more guys standing in line.

Now, now, play nice! ":^)

The throat on the Shopsmith IS a tad tight at 11 inches, but it's been a good saw for me otherwise.

You're right F14, I apologize, but I only spent $250 on my antique (company went out of business in '43)- and then another hundred or so getting tires vulcanized on the wheels. Any my guy probably takes up as much floor space as your multi-purpose Shopsmith.

I can resaw 14" boards however. Recently used it to make a 10" deep bending jig for a round-topped window, strip laminated. Then resawing those 10" wide boards to 1/16" so they would bend around a 4" radius. Redwood doesn't bend very gracefully.

I was just kidding, Tom.

Your window project sounds like a blast! Many's the time I've wished I had more resaw capacity, but there's a limit to how many tools my wife will let me buy ":^)

I got a 'real' tablesaw to complement the Shopsmith a few years back, but I still use the 'smith for the bandsaw, disk sander and lathe.

Hey F14, that's the fun of email. I'd never have apologized if I'd thought you were serious";^)

The window came out well, keeping in mind that the radii for the frame and stop are different. Customer was delighted. Paying customers keep wives unconcerned about tool purchases, at least around here. And in my shop the bandsaw gets the real workouts. I almost didn't drag that thing here from Denver when we moved but I didn't know if I could find another as nice. Had to buy a truck with a power lift. Lot of cast iron.

Congrats on the dedicated tablesaw. Those little things on the multi-tools always looked just a bit inadequate. I spent the morning taking a 12-14" tablesaw apart prior to a paint job. Heavy sucker. When finished, my unisaw goes to a new home. The 12-14" even has an emergency kick switch. Hope I never need it.

If theres not a rubber one available how about making one from leather. Cut to circumfrence minus 1/4" then soak in water, install and let dry. That should shrink tight to the wheel.
