I have just bought a STIHL 28AV chainsaw from a garage sale that runs well, but the chain oiler doesn't work. Does anyone know what goes wrong with these? I filled it with oil and the feed pipe and filter inside the oil tank are connected OK, so it can't be that. I have started to dismantle it to check out the pump and have taken off the cutting bar etc to get down to the oil pump and have got as far as uncovering the nylon gear that drives the pump, but the screws that hold the pump on are behind the gear, so I can't reach them. The gear pulls out about 1/8" then stops, how is it held in?
The gear spins round OK, but doesn't feel like it is doing much pumping!

This is a nice machine and feels a lot safer than the MAC35 I have been using, it cuts really well too, so I would like to get it fixed - any help would be much appreciated.

PS Beneath the oil filler is what looks like a blanking plug, whats it blanking off?

Thanks Martin Weber

Gear should spin out of the oil pump. Look for a stripped worm gear, stripped gear inside pump, loose or missing pin in bottom of pump that holds the pump internal gear in place, bad gasket or dirt in passage under pump.

I took the liberty of posting this over to the Woodticks group. Very helpful group of chainsaw enthusiasts. Cut and paste this link if it doesn't work. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/woodticks/
