ive got a problem with the tranny on my 89 chevy 6 lug 3/4 ton its got a 350/700r4 and the tranny has seemed to not upshift anymore. it gets to about 25 or so and starts revving out. on the truck forum one reply said it might be a gear in the governer housing that is stripped. is there anything else that anyone has experienced that might help any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, Same thing happened to my 87 Astro van with the same trans. "Apple-cored" as the mechanic said, $13.00 to the Chevy dealer and I got another 20,000 miles out of it before the engine threw a rod and destroyed the block. Pry off the round cover on the left rear of the trans. and you will see the stripped gear. It has been a while.

I'm in the automotive business. I've seen a lot of cars in my 17 years at it and I'd say they are designed on a 10 year life expectancy, if they are taken care of, that is. I heard a guy at an oil change place complain of his GM sunbird that at 169000 miles it was falling apart. (He didn't keep a nice car). I laughed and told him it was 27000 miles around the center of the earth and his car had made it around more than 6 times so it might be his expectations that needed adjustment. I'm prone to just replace parts like engines and trannies when they get far along, of course if they are newer, a part replacement is ok. I just hate throwing good money at a new part when I am putting it into a group of old parts that will soon need replacement themselves.

Only other thing that comes to mind is modulator valve and or associated vacuum lines, if it is even equipped with a modulator valve. Changed a governor in a customer's Chevy pickup once, due to the same problem you are experiencing, and 6 months later ended up O/Hauling the trans. Seems he insisted on driving it a number of months after the gov. failed, this probably took its toll on the clutches. In no time the trans was junk. Let your concience be your guide, good luck.
