Picked up two Ford FE 427's(V8)- (side oiler possibly-has the machining(?)). They came out of a 40foot Chris Craft. All the marine stuff is still attached (transmission, intakes, carb, alternator, etc). Thinking of moving one to a F-100. Anyone in the forum do something similar in the past?

Ray

If I were you I would advertise them in Hemmings Motor News. Those motors are worth $2500-$3000 each to a Ford collector if they are complete and not cracked.

I think all you have to do to make the backwards one run the other way is a proper camshaft and oil pump drive gear, and the appropriate water pump. That's how it is on the Chevrolet engines used in a twin, counter-rotating arrangement, and can't imagine it's too much different on the Ferds.

In most marine aps one notor will run clockwise and the other counterclockwise. One should be contervertable, the other most likely will be rotating the wrong way.

Yep. Thats correct. I'm stumped at the moment as to what to do with these motors. They were headed for recycling. Wife thinks I'm building a post and beam barn out back. When she hears the air tools tonight ...

Maybe someone with a boat would like the pair. Seems more likely than findinga good use for them the way they are now.

Yea, thats what you should do with them. But sell them as a pair. That is if'n they'r rebuildable. I know many a marina that buy these thing up just to sit on a shelf untill some poor unsupecting boater needs them. Oddly enough, then there the only ones within 200 miles and made of gold.

Ends up I'm stripping them down to the blocks and putting in storage till I find a truck to put one of them in. Want something with some pulling power. Thanks for the replies.

Remember one thing: These are YOUR engines now. In my opinion, as long as you don't butcher the castings, you should put them in and use them any way you see fit, just have fun with them. Even if you put them in a high performance wheel barrow, the only way these engines would go to waste would be to have a collector set on them for forever , forget about them, and someone's estate scrap them because they didn't know what they were. These engines (esp the marine applications) were made for torque, and to have fun with. Get 'em going, and have a ball, you may never find another. When you are tired of them, then part with them.

The counter rotating motor's crank seal surface is different and will destroy the seal if ran clockwise. I think it can be machined to run the other direction. If I'm correct these blocks were cast side oilers but were not drilled side oilers 40 ft boats don't turn 7000 rpm and all that crank oiling isn't needed. I would like to know myself if these blocks can be drilled as side oilers?
