Ok Guys thanks for all the good advice about welders. I finally bought a Hobart stick 235 AC/DC
and cant wait to get going with it. BUT... Need to run 220 to the garage and the unit says the amp imput is 47.5 however the instructions say Max recommendation is a 70 amp fuse. I want to run a 220 plug into the garage about 20 feet from fuse box. any suggestions?? what size wire i will need (4) (6)gage ?? is 70 fuse to high?? any info is always great..

If you look under article 630 in the National Electricial Code book it will tell you everything you need to have a safe instalation. You can check out a copy at your local library, or just look at it there and take notes.

A 50 amp breaker is all that you should need. Hobart advertises that the machine draws 47.5 amp on the input side when the machine is outputting 225 amp. It is very unlikely that you will ever weld with 225 amps. To run this high of an amperage you have to be running at least a 3/16" diameter rod. Most hobbiest welders are going to either use 3/32" or 1/8" diameter rods, which will put you at using somewhere around 130 amps as a maximum on your output. Since you will only be drawing a 130 amp or less you will be drawing no were near 50 amps. The main purpose for buying such a high output machine is to have a high duty cycle for the amperage range that you will actually be using it in.

A 6 ga wire should be more than adequate, however you should check you local code.
