Looking for advice... I'm putting 9'x7' garage doors in the peak end of a pole barn, 6"x6" posts, horizontal 2"x4" across those, supporting vertical steel siding. Don't have doors yet, unfamiliar with metal trim or flashing available. Do I install the frame flush with outside edge of 6"x6" and trim out across 2"x4"s and siding with wood, or do I install frame flush with outside edge of 2"x4"s? (Do they make something like a U-shaped metal trim to mount to the front of the frame to cover the edges of the metal siding?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I used 2X8s for headers, and also to provide a door casing for the garage door, I had used 2X6s to rough in the opening. I brought the 2X8 casings out even with the horizontal boards I attached my metal to, put brickmold trim on the 2X8s, then used J channel against the edge of the brickmold to trim out the metal.

I did the same with the 2x8 framing inside the posts. My posts were set 16' 1" apart for a 16' door. With the 2x8's inside the final dimension was 15' 10" giving 1 inch of overlap on each side for the door to rest against. I then had my steel supplier make a c shaped channel to fit over the 2x8's. On the outside of this I nailed the regular "c" channel used around windows. All wood is covered by metal this way when completed.

I'd check the instructions for the doors first and find out what the final dimensions for the opening should be. Next, I'd make sure that the header for the door opening was heavy enough. Might want to use at least a 2x8, maybe even a 2x10 or larger, as part of the frame of the door will attach there.

Check with your local lumber yard where you can get metal for buildings. Theye should have a list or preferably diagrams which show the shapes of trim that is available for finishing a pole building.

I've got a couple books on pole buildings that show the common trim shapes. Might check the local library in the building trade section for books on construction...they might give you some other ideas on how to set the door.

Good luck.
