After many years, my 5T hyd. jack won't pump that last inch so I guess it needs fluid. It has a threaded plug on the cylinder. HOw do you position the piston, how full should it be, does it need to be bled?

As usual, thanks in advance for the advice.

Hey -

Ram should be down. If it is a bottle jack, fill only to the filler hole, don't tip it over to get more fluid in. Service jacks are more varied. Other than Lincoln/Walkers, you don't want too much fluid in them. There needs to be enough air space so that the jack does not suck in air when the ram goes up, and blow out fluid when the ra comes down. You also need to find out where the fluid is leaking out, or if it is just leaking internally past a valve or seal. If it is a name brand US made jack (or some imports like Jet, Norco, Sears) you can get seal kits fairly easily if needed. Let me know if I can help.

Ram should always be down when filling with fluid.

Hi Dave,

What I do is take the plug out fill to the hole edge then pump the ram up to full stroke then release the pressure and push the ram down, recheck the oil level then put the plug in.
