We use them at work for room temps and surface temps of food. They work fast and are accurate. Little things will effect them as we found they are something of a happy medium of the immediate environment they are in versus the internal temp in the food vessel. They work best on mechanical applications like bearings and refrigeration systems.

We use them for checking room temp to decide if flashover or backdraft is possible before entering a burning house and also for looking for hot spots where fire could be, keeps us from tearing apart a house to look for pockets of fire,,, oh yeah I am a Fire Fighter/EMT

Our department, with much assisstance from the community purchased an infrared camera for much that same purpose. Works well, but with pictures on a grey scale screen, specific temperatures are not known. Does this unit give a specific temperature when pointed at different parts of the room?

Our dept. does not have an infared camera, but our next door neighbors use them as Jim described. They are cheap, useful and a good safety tool. About $100 bucks I think. A lot cheaper than the camera.

We use them extensively..... .. to monitor part temp during thermal spray operations and to read coating temps.

Be careful with them... I was using Mine to check the cyl. head telp on My Kohler engine in My Cub Cadet and the electrical field generated by the current going to the spark plug fried the circuit board & computer chip in it. Had to send it back to the company and have it repaired, updated, improved and recalibrated. Cost about what I paid for it!

It's not tractors, but racing teams use them to measure temperature across the tread of racing tires. The temperature readings tell them how to set up the chassis.

you can check anything you suspect is leaking into another system if temp is different. We used them in power plant to check for fires in coal pipes and silos alsoto check mess on large gears bearings etc quite accuracte too.
