I have a Homelite XL2 I have put new points in and rebuilt the barb. If I let the saw sit over night it will start and run for about 3 seconds and then won't start again. I have checked it is getting spark and fuel. Also, I set the points at .015 is that correct? Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem with a 360 Homelite. the problem turned out to be a very thin, almost membrane like, rubber tube that runs from the carb to the cylinder. It had gotten a split in it and extra air was getting in through the crack. I don't know if that might be your problem but it's another possibility. Incidentally, this happened after John Deere had bought Homelite and they wouldn't sell the 70 cent part separately, even though the parts book from Homelite showed the part number as a separate item. The only way I could get it was to buy a carburator which cost $90. Not very customer friendly, that company. Good thing they don't own the company anymore.

That part should be available from any decent dealer by itself. Incidentally, tech support is much worse under Ryobi ownership. The new guys are clueless. They're also switching to making thigs like cordless grass shears.

BTW: The XL-2 doesn't have an intake boot.

Steve Besides checking the fuel filter & line, you need to check to see if you have an air leak. The little XL & Super 2 series used thrust bushings on the crankshaft...they wear with use, then the crankshaft seals get excessive wear. Try moving the crank sideways back & forth...it has to be slightly loose, but if there is 3/8"+ you need one or two new thrust washers P/N 69093 $3.50 & seals P/N 94638/07025/09108 $1.79.

You've ruled out lack of fuel and spark so the remaining thing that occurs to me is gas mixture and carb settings. Drain and refill the tank to insure its not bad fuel. I suspect there's a speck of dirt in the carb impeding flow. ALWAYS filter your gas as you fill the tank with clean fresh fuel. Does your gas line have a filter of the end? Use a small stiff wire to pull it from the tank and replace it anyway. While you have the gas line out inspect it for cracks/splits and stoppage from deteoration. The old type rubber hoses will slowly fail from exposure to new fuels.
