Recently purchased at auction what appears to be a brush-cutting device. Plate on frame reads: Root Mfg. Co., Baxter Springs, Kansas. Chamber of Commerce there informed me it was a family owned business that closed 20 or so years ago. Device mounted on two wheels. Metal rims are two pieces and bolt together with solid rubber tire that are 19" in height. Self-propelled via a small wheel mounted on horizontal engine shaft that can be lowered to ride on one of larger wheels and move device. Long mandrel on front that saw blade can be nounted on. Mandrel can be rotated so saw cuts vertical or horizontal. Two belts from engine to mandrel pulley. Has a 5.25 Briggs & Stratton engine with pull rope. Research indicates engine mfg. in 1953. Any info greatly appreciated!

Root went down in the sixtys if I recall right. They made lawn and garden type equiptment.Don't know if they made a dedicated brush saw,but many of the 2wheel garden tractors of the area had front mounted brush saw/buzz saw attachments offered as options along with reel and rotary mowers, generators, rotary hoes,snow/dozer blades etc.Don't know of a "Root" site but you could see this type of equiptment at David Bradley,Gravely and other 2 wheel garden tractor sites.
