My homemade flatbed trailer needs reinforcement, it currently consists of 1/4" diamond plate deck on a frame of two 10" I-beams with 2X2" thinwalled square tube as crossmembers every 2ft. I am looking a 6X2" channel every 18" as crossmembers but am worried about adding 450lbs (not to mention the cost). I was thinking about welding 6"X3/16" flatiron every 18" and welding 2"X3/16" across the bottom, like an I-Beam. Or cutting the channel to 24" centers? I would like to haul my 5 ton IH500C. The span for the crossmembers is 76" and current weight is 2600lbs and I just found two heavy duty 6-7K drop axles. Any good ideas? Thanks for any help!

I have built a lot of projects in my shop.....many of them trailers.....but what you need to do is make sure that you talk, with a guy that builds heavy trailers.....You stand a chance of over building ,as well as under building.....There is a custom trailer builder here in south western Ohio, maybe he would talk to you on the phone.....If you need him let me know I don't have his # handy....(that is all he does)What are you going to use a tow truck?

Don, the fellow who told me to weld 6"X2" channel on 18" centers has built and reinforced many trailers, he's an aircraft certified welder and retired iron worker who used to repair and maintain heavy equipment. He's one of the most mechanically talented people I know. He used to build racing boats and engines, the type of guy who isn't happy with stuff until he re-engineers it. He just put a chevy s10 v-6 in his jeep. Really neat fellow. I'm using a rusty ol' 1983 chevy 3/4 ton diesel 4X4 flatbed with a 4 speed muncie and 4.11 rear end, goes slow but pulls good.
