I have a F700 with the factory 429 engine. It is about a 1990 model (not sure exactly). The motor has always had exhaust leaks at the exhaust manifold where it meets the head. I would like to swap this out to a 460 engine, very simple 4 bbl with no smog pumps....etc. Can this be done using the same motor mounts, transmission...etc??? Does everything bolt up directly or is there substantial differences between the two motors that would require refitting the transmission, accessories...etc???

Thanks for any experiences and suggestions you may have.

David

Go for it they are both big block fords...I would replace the exhaust manifold bolts in the 460 while it is out...they had the same problems as the429....do not use the 429 exhaust manifolds ,they must be warped!!!If you have the intake manifold off the 460...retorque the manifold after about500 miles...if it ever feels like it is loosing power ---retorque the intake.....

Hi David,

The blocks of the 429/460 are the same. The biggest difference between the two engines is the crankshaft and pistons. I'm not sure about this, but there may(or may not) be some differences in the manifold/ports and/or cylinder head accessory mounting points on the very late 460 engines. Otherwise there are no differences between a 429 and a 460 that would require anything more than swapping the accessories, oil pan, intake, etc, as needed from your 429 onto the 460...Al English

Been about 10 years since I swaped a 75 460 into my 74 IH pickup, so the 429-460 differences are a little fuzzy. The biggest difference I remember about 75 and earlier engines was the pilot bushing/torque converter pilot hole in the rear of the crank was different. 429 has the large hole like a 390 while the 460 crank had the small 302-351 small block size hole. I remember in an engine swap you had to have the proper torqe converter as the 429 converter was too large to fit in a 460 crank and a 460 converter nose was too small to align itself in a 429 crank. Also as I remember, the 75 and earlier 460's were internally balanced while 76 and later had some of the balance done in the damper and flywheel.
Best to check this out as you don't want to get into a situation like trying to swap a 390 in place of a 391. The 390 is internally balanced while the 391 is externally balanced in the damper and flywheel. The 390 will fit in,but it will vibrate with a 391 flywheel on it.

just did this 2 yrs ago . the 429 /460 are same block for motor mounts, bell housings water pumps intake pan etc BUT the 460 up to 1978 is internally balanced .any thing after that requires its own harmonic balancer and flywheel /flexplate (auto) the later 1978 and up had a balanceweight on the inside of the harmonic balancer and is a easy indicator . any thing prior to 1978 you could use a 390 flywheel (11.5 vs 12 clutch ) 460 flywheels arent cheap and not to many make it to the junk yards .there are more of the 390 around

I also have another question regarding the engine swap concerning the bellhousing. I have a later model (1982) 460 from an E series van, an ambulance. I've purchased a 460 flywheel but it hits in the 351M bellhousing . . .what bellhousing do I need when trying to put it in a '77 F250 with a 4 speed?
