Hi,

I am building a large tool box on a Ford f350. It will be 4ft tall & 8ft long & 2 ft deep. A 4ft x 8ft side will be one large door tied into the 2ft x 8ft top panel so as to open like a gullwing. This door will be in aluminum & weight should not exceed about 75lbs

What i am looking to do is to try & set this up to open & close automatically. I figured that a hydraulic system would probably be best. Weight at the lifting points on the door shouldn't be more than about 150-200lbs Problem here is I really don't know jack about hydraulics. I have been researching it some on the internet & have found pieces & parts but not much in the way of "How to" I called a couple people but I felt that they were selling me on something excessive (probably liability issues there)

So the question here is: Is there a real simple way for me to set this up. Maybe 2 ramms per door, one 12v pump/motor and a 12v switch to actuate the doors? (Vendors are wanting me to have a resevoir, expensive pumps & this & that to get the price to around $700. I am a boater & my hydraulic tilt / trim motor only cost around $100 & the switch for it seems to be nothing really special.) For my toolbox here I can get ramms for around $30ea Seems to me that just a simple pump should be it for me not a $300 one + a resivior.

I have seen pumps online (Like at Great Plains catalog) but there are no specifics as to a motor for them.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Cody,

Becareful about using your power steering pump as your hydraulic pump as Ford on some years also uses the PS for the brake hydraulics.

This is a website that will teach you eveything you need to know about hydraulics.

Check out the Duff Norton web page. I think that you will find one of their actuators will solve your problem, make your system more simple and probably save you money. If you have a truck equipment outfit,Wheel chair outfit or the like near you you may be able to find one of the actuators used.
