The last two summers my 1954 case pulled my similar vintage bush hog just fine. I could go for 8 hours or more at a time. This year I topped off the gear oil in the bush hog, hooked up the bush hog to the PTO and when I engaged the PTO there was a bad vibration when the blades rotated. I also seem to hear a scraping type noise underneath the deck of the bush hog when the blades are rotating that I haven't noticed below. The vibration just gets worse when I speed up. Anything I can check? Both blades seem to be ok.

My father passed away recently and thinking about selling his Farmall Super C with bushhog - we think it is about 1940 series and is in working condition. Also have two G tractors which are in working condition. Looking for prices and contacts who are interested in buying - these are all original owner tractors. Thanks

Hi Judy,

Sorry to about your father passing on!

You might want to use the photo ads and the classified ads in the left hand column on this page.
The photo ads will be a plus on selling. Look thru past ads as both will give you an idea of what prices are like in your area.

You have already posted the fact that the problem has been found and cured. There is one other thing that can cause such a problem and perhaps this posting will help someone who may have that condition. Some of the PTO shafts (Howse is one brand) can be assembled "out of time". Turn the pto shaft til the yoke that goes on the PTO shaft is horizontal. Observe the yoke that is on the mower gearbox. It should be horizontal at the same time. If it is not, pull the shaft apart and reassemble with the yokes "in time".

also check and make sure the gearbox is securely bolted in place. i had a bushhog that the gearbox bolts came loose while i was mowing. made a heckuva noise and vibration. be safe!

Be careful when you check under the hog, a buddy of mine had one fall on him. He said it was a real scary thing having his wife start the tractor to raise the bush hog while he was under it. I usually shorten the toplink as much as possible, then raise it, then block the back end with tall jack stands. You might also want to make sure that the driveshaft is not bent, or sometimes the way your toplink is adjusted affects the angles of the u-joints in the shaft making it shake badly. Russ

Yes , the swinging blades need to be free. If they have grass wrapped around the blade bolts , and one or both of the blades are kind of set up , not allowing them to extend strait out while turning , this will cause vibration. It does on mine anyways. I move my blade back and forth until the old grass falls out. The vibration is gone until next time I get ready to mow. I go through this every time my mower sets around.

Found the answer:

Well, thanks for all your advice. I figured out what the problem was. Several of you suggested checking the blades to make sure they were swinging free. They were swinging alright, but one was upside down! What a stupid thing to do. I had forgotten that I decided to sharpen the blades at the end of last summer. When I put them back in I must have put one of them upside down. No wonder there was the vibration. One was angled up and the other was angled down.

Anyway, thanks again. Chalk this one up to experience.

Keith
