Hi Guys (and Gals!)
I'm getting ready to paint my restored F-14 and have decided it might be a good time to upgrade to a better spray gun. I have several other projects in the works as well and they will all get new paint jobs in the future. I currently have a cheap conventional gun. I've read a little about HVLP guns and would like some input from someone who has actually used them. Also any recommendations as to brand and models. I have a 6.5 hp compressor or even a 100cfm diesel unit I use for sandblasting. I would like to spend under $200 for a gun if possible. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Tim

So far it doesn't sound as if the HVLP guns are as popular as I was lead to believe. I'm not a professional painter by any means but would like to achieve a better finish than you can get with rattle cans. Especially since some of my upcoming projects will have considerably more sheet metal than the F14. I have gotten fair results with my el cheapo conventional gun but would like to improve if I can. Devilbiss finishlineII. about $100-$150 depending on where you find it. Great gun for the money. Comes with 2 tips for various paints. Will paint anything from a farm implement to car auto repair.

My background with guns was upper-end furniture spraying with conventional guns. I own a Binks that sits under a thick coat of dust. When I found a dedicated HVLP (with turbine), used, I jumped on it.

The advantage of HVLP isn't in the paint job but in the working environment. You don't get the cloud of bounce-back mist that a conventional gun gives. This is due to the extremely low spray pressure. I don't think anybody will ever pay for an HVLP with reduced product useage but it sure is nicer for the operator. The difference between air and dedicated HVLP is even lower spray pressure.

As far as learning how to spray with HVLP, it's no more difficult than conventional. Both require a basic understanding of product and gun adjustments. You can make a mess with either. I haven't used the Harbor Freight air HVLP gun but several people on this list have said favorable things in the past. If I was in your situation, I'd go that way unless you can find a better gun cheaper. And, no, you can't have my Binks.

I have owned and used many guns over the past 30+ years. For my money, spraying a single stage enamel or lacquer paint, you can not beat a Binks #7. You can buy spray caps and tips to spray base coat/ clear coat if you need too also and most any auto parts store can get and fix them. DeVilbiss is good and some of the knock offs are ok (Sharp makes a good one but hard to clean). I don't care for HVLP, but they can do a great job with lots of practice. Hope this helps:)

i'm not familiar with the operation of a HVLP gun, but i bought a top line DeVilbiss spray gun almost 30 years ago when i was auto painting and it still performs like the day i bought it. i think i would think twice before i bought a cheepie gun. you know, "you get what you pay for".

If you wanna go pro, get a Binks gun, but
aint cheap...

I have a Harbor Freight Binks copy that cost
49$ I am fairly happy with.

I think your toys are great!!!! I have heard that the spray gun you are looking to buy is very handy.....Smaller pattern ,but very little overspray....I see you like to paint the parts before assembly and most of them are rough castings...the cheaper guns should be fine....I read that it is very important to match the gun to your compressor ...Idon't have one but I am thinking about one for painting parts and triming the hard to get areas before the over all paint job...I use a regular gun I paid $450.00 for 13 years ago....It does a super job....I enjoyed your pictures .I like to see work done properly!!!
